Tavern Brawler inadvertantly proficient with Alchemist's Fire, etc...

Tavern Brawler makes you proficient with improvised weapons. Acid, alchemist's fire, holy water, and oil are all improvised ranged attacks, so a tavern brawler would be proficient with them. This opens up the idea of a tavern brawler grappling an enemy, shoving them prone with another attack, and then dumping acid/fire/etc. on them until they're dead. The disadvantage from making a ranged attack with an adjacent enemy is cancelled by the advantage of attacking an adjacent prone enemy. Depending on how much gold you have free, this could be a useful tactic against certain enemies.

Sounds good.  The only part I disagree with is the use of the term "inadvertently" in the title.  You can't possibly know whether or not this was by design.

Yea, i noticed this before.

It's even better with a theif, as they can use items it as a bonus action.  Plus they get expertise for grabs.

There's even some good reason to think you could sneak attack with it.  Though that will take some DM convinciing.

Throwing a bottle at someone is *classic* Tavern Brawler tactics.  Just because it is filled with acid or flaming oil instead of rotgut doesn't change that.

If you can do all that, why don't you just choke him out or break his arm? Why in the %^&$ are you screwing around with a bottle of acid when you (clearly) have so much control over your opponent?

If this happened in a movie you were watching, you'd roll your eyes and say "oh seriously? ACID WHILE WRESTLING? THIS MOVIE IS TOTALLY STUPID!!!"

"At this point, you would begin to regale me with tales of your experiences as a medieval reenactor who also happens to hold a black belt in jiu-jitsu, at which juncture I would pour the acid down my own throat and roll up a wizard."

Fortunately for you, we have the rules you just used to cover just such a contingency - you are grappling with yourself and so while your attack should work, you are also immune to your own acid attack because ROLL > NUMBER == WINNING

You're just gonna have to live with your own rule-lawyering bar brawler for another night.

If grappling works this way, why aren't more DMs using it to completely mess with parties? I could put a level 1 brute in the bar with a strength of 20, all he has to do is walk up to a caster, grab a handful of robe, win the strength roll and then start dumping acid on them because they are completely immobilized.

This is what I picture a grapple to look like. Plenty of space to drop acid, or push prone or both. http://www.absolutecleanonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/noogie.jpg

IDK how efficient it would turn out, but the build sounds awesome to me!  He should be called The Disfigurer
