Tempest Cleric (nova vs. higher level spells)

In making a Tempest cleric for AL play I am having trouble deciding whether to go 2 levels of Fighter for action surge or to just go full cleric all the way. I will be playing from level 3 up, and am not concerned about level 20 play which will be several years away if ever. Most play time will be spent in the 5 - 15 level range.

Race: Dwarf

Starting with wis 16 and con 16 Str will probably be 10 - 12

Pros of fighter 2:

Action Surge nova capability

1 AC for Defensive combat style

Con saves at level 1 (full cleric would take resilient feat at 12)

Cons:

1 level lower spell progression as cleric of equivalent level.

Stat bumps delayed two levels, 6, 10, 14, 18

Wisdom save won't be proficient until level 14 (Resilient feat)

What do you guys think?

Those are the pro's and cons, yes.

Do you feel the nova outweighs the delay in spells?

Probably.  Clerics don't have too many higher level spells that are game changing.

As long as you get short rests anyways.

Thanks for that, I will double check the rules, I was under the impression only the new class mattered. Either way I am sure I can manage the 13 str.

13 str  OR dex for the fighter.

And you'll probably want 15 Str for heavy armor, or 14 Dex for medium armor anyways.

My tempest cleric is 8th level. From a pure optimization perspective, I would advise you not to multiclass. I don't feel the improved nova ability once per short rest offsets the delay in spell progression. At your 3rd-level starting point, a straight tempest cleric on the offensive is casting spirit guardians, call lightning, spiritual weapon and shatter, while the Ftr 2/Clr 1 is casting bless and attacking once per round -- twice per round once per short rest. [Edit: Obviously a 3rd-cleric isn't casting spirit guardians and call lightning. That'll teach me to post at work.] I expect the experience would be similar as you increase in levels -- you're potentially getting more out of your once/rest nova as your spellcasting improves, but the spells you're behind on are getting more powerful as well.

It's true that your cleric won't have tremendous nova ability (tempest is a little better than most, but still nowhere near top-tier). But at 5+, you'll have excellent sustained damage-over-time with spirit guardians and spiritual weapon up. My advice is to focus on that, along with all your buffing, healing and utility, and leave the novas to other PCs.
