This thread is more for players that use minis and mats, but all opinions are welcome.
I am researching the viability of a specialized tape measure that reads 5 feet on 1 inch scale for the purpose of speeding up play using minis and mats. Simply measure the distance and know the footage without counting or math.
While any tape measure would do for this task, I'm researching the viability of the novelty. In the years I have been thinking about this item, all that I have asked say they would buy a Distometer if it was reasonably priced.
One version is a simple 3 foot length tape measure with the above mentioned scale and decals of DnD imagery. This would be a cheaper item, likely in a plastic bucket on the sales counter.
Another version is more of a collectable novelty wherein the casing of the tape measure would be in the shape of an iconic dragon with the tape itself reflecting the breath type.
Part of my research is gathering numbers on players, existing products, etc.
I would greatly appreciate any thoughts or additional info you can throw my way.
Thanks for reading.

Combat tends to take place within a small enough area that counting squares is quicker than even reaching over to grab a tape measure, let alone grabbing it, pulling it out, and reading it. Movement is often not straight and there are usually lots of other miniatures around to get in the way of straight movement and the actual tape measure. If you think it'd be useful, your encounters are probably very different from most of the ones I've been in. |

b) ... Millimeter ruler, if you used 5 per Inch graph paper.
c) ... use a calculator for speedy (x^2 + y^2) = z^2
d1) ... make the PCs guess their ranges (like they ought to be doing, unless they have actual rulers IN game)
d2) ... Wish
e) ... move to Hexagonal maps for greater accuracy, yes greater accuracy
f) ... move to 3D Hexagon stacking, which doesn't exist yet, invent the math, beta test it, get paid in psychic pay from maybe 10 gamers who might High Maths understand it. |
