The Nature Boy

I'm working on a couple different cleric options for a game I'm joining this weekend. I keep going back to War, Tempest, and Life, but I examined the other options as well, and found an interesting build with some fun potential: the Nature Boy!

No, not that Nature Boy (unless he really fits your concept).

The Nature domain is likely to be overlooked by most because it's not War, Tempest, or Life, but it does have a hidden gem in it: Acolyte of Nature. This feature grants you a skill proficiency, and a druid cantrip of your choice.

One of the problems with a pure cleric is MAD: you need Wisdom for spells, and Strength or Dexterity for fighting. That doesn't usually leave a lot of points left for anything else, especially a decent Constitution score (for concentrating). BUT: if you go Nature, and take the shillelagh cantrip, you are freed from the MAD shackles by moving your melee attacks to Wisdom (assuming you want melee attacks; if not, the rest of this probably won't thrill you too much).

The Nature Boy I'm working on now looks like this:

Hill dwarf

Strength        12

Dexterity        14

Constitution 16

Intelligence    8

Wisdom        16

Charisma       8

With scale mail and a shield, he's got an AC 18, +2 initiative, 12hp to start, and a weapon that activates with a bonus action for 1d8+3. Not bad for a cleric!

I could dump Strength, but I like having some physical ability to fall back on. You could easily shift those points to Charisma if you wanted to be more charming than burly. A wood elf Nature Boy would swap the Dex and Con numbers, and have a formidable cleric archer, or rapier duelist (which I considered, but I already have a wood elf druid archer in another game). Dex is clearly the best physical stat you can have; if you want to truly optimize a Nature Boy, it's gonna be Dexterity.

Nature domain doesn't have any dramatic buffs like War, but it does have some other charms. Like Charm Animals and Plants. This doesn't seem like a big deal, but when you can make nice with that pack of wolves, or the giant croc that just came up next to you in the water, or that dire bear you just woke up, you'll be glad to have it. And it's not single target; every legal target within 30 feet has to save, or be charmed!

Dampen Elements is a superb power in the Nature domain, no question. You can use your reaction to grant resistance to yourself or a creature within 30' of you when hit by acid, cold, fire, lightning, or thunder! It's not Channel Divinity... it's a reaction! Sadly, it's only one target, but it can really save the bacon of whoever just got lightning-lasered by a behir, or your poor fireballed fighter.

At 8th level you get Divine Strike, like most other domains. It adds +1d8 damage to your weapon attacks. However, unlike other domains, you can choose between fire, cold, and lightning each time you hit. So if you're fighting something with vulnerability, that bonus damage is doubled.

At 17th level, all those friendly plants and animals you can charm can also be commanded. That pack of wolf-mounted goblins will be very unhappy when their mounts all turn on them and start chowing down!

So yes, Nature is actually a pretty decent domain.

Oh wow, nice catch on Acolyte of Nature.  I've heavily considered a Nature Cleric and figured I'd snag shillelagh with a feat.

*edit*  Polearm Master, shield, quarterstaff, shillelagh

Rancid Rogue noted this in a post a few days. It is a good combo. You can also just put 15 in strength so you can wear heavy armor and you never need to invest in anything but wisdom again. It is a little weird that a nature cleric can wear plate given that druids hate metal armor but whatever.

I don't know why Nature gets heavy armour proficiency. It doesn't make much thematic sense. I didn't pursue that, scale mail + Dex is fine with me.

I'm sure there'll be heavy armor options involving dragon scales, ankheg plates, etc. in the DMG.
