So this talk of Thri-Kreen lately has left me wanting. So I fired up my laptop, loaded my DMG pdf, and created this:

Thri-Kreen
Ability Score Increase: +2 Dexterity, +1 Wisdom
Age: Thri-Kreen have short life spans, living for only thirty years on average.
Alignment: Thri-Kreen tend towards neutrality, and believe more in personal freedoms that adherence to rules.
Size: Medium
Speed: Your base walking speed is 40 feet.
Darkvision: 60ft
Multi-Limbed: Thri-Kreen possess a second set of arms. While weaker than their main pair, these limbs are strong enough to wield light weapons and manipulate objects with.
Sleepless: Thri-Kreen are incapable of sleeping. Sleeping is not required to benefit from a long rest, and magic cannot put you to sleep.
Chameleon Carapace: The thri-kreen can change the color of their carapace to match the color and texture of its surroundings. As a result, you have advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to hide.
Languages: You can read and write Common. You can speak, read and write Thri-Kreen. Thri-kreen is a language without words. To show emotion and reaction, a thri-kreen clacks its mandibles and waves its antennae, giving other thri-kreen a sense of what it is thinking and feeling. Other creatures find this manner of communication difficult to interpret and impossible to duplicate.

I think it should be a DEX/STR race.  Why would kreen get wisdom?  Or maybe DEX/CON...  Darkvision is kind of weird, limited blindsight (like 10 feet) would be more in line with an insect race based off ants.  Multi-limbed is fine.  Sleepless needs to be reworked.  Ants and other insects do in fact sleep.  Queens sleep for up to 9 hours a day while worker ants do about half as much.  So something like the current trance stuff for elves would make quite a bit more sense but without the benefit of remaining relatively alert.  You're actually sleeping, you just don't need as much sleep as everyone else to gain the same benefit as an 8 hour rest.  Chameleon is interesting because I don't think there's an insect that can actually do this in the real world.  But I think you should make it more specific.  Just straight advantage at all times seems weird?  Maybe make it like in tunnels, underground areas, rocky terrain and that sort of thing?

fair enough about the stats, even in 4e though it seemed odd that they would give an insect +wisdom as an option.  the other option was +dex and +str which made quite a bit more sense in my opinion.  Con also made more sense since bugs are remarkably tough.  roaches must have con at 100 or something.

What is unbalanced with a limited blindsight racial trait?  Or maybe I don't understand?

Ah I read up on the monster manual entry for kreen.  Interesting stuff and yeah they apparently don't sleep.

EDIT:  For those wondering about the stats from the monster manual

There are some stats for them in the dmg that might be a helpful reference for creating a 5e player character version.

Is having unconditional advantage on Stealth checks a bit on the powerful side? I understand that this is what the MM says, but I was just wondering from a player race perspective. What about swapping it for the Standing Leap feature (or a modified version of it) instead?

Also, adding in something that mentions Thri-Kreen still need to rest or restrict themselves to light tasks to the Sleepless feature might be appropriate.

When did they become based off ants? Since the the original and advanced DND in dark sun which is where they were from they were giant mantis people. They could jump enormous distances poison some of the other parts were true but to say they are based on ants I believe is incorrect at least in earlier edition don't know bout this edition. Just my 2 cents suppose I'm one of those old gamers now just didn't think it would be at 27

The 2E Darksun boxed set had Kreen as +2 Dex, +1 Wisdom

I checked the back of the dmg and they weren't listed among the creatures to make into npcs.

I think that MasterNamer may have meant the Monster Manual rather than the DMG.
