Tiefling Warlock Question

I'm going to be playing as a level 11 warlock for a rebooted game.

As a tiefling, I have the Thaumaturgy cantrip, Hellish Rebuke, and Darkness as racial spells and can cast  them once per day.  Could I cast those spells using my spell slots as well, treating them as 5th level spells (being level 11 and all) or do I have to learn them through being a warlock, even though I have them as a tiefling?

EDIT: Another question popped into mind about Armor of Agathys.  I'll have 25 THP when I cast it.  Say that I get hit a couple times and the THP is reduced to 7.  If I kill something and hae Dark One's Blessing trigger, can I take the THP from that over AoA and continue having the damage benefits of AoA?

I'll be brutally honest: I don't know the definitive answer.

But I'd say the spells you are granted from your racial selection as essentially racial abilities. They are spells, but are independent of your spell slot usage. As such, they cannot be "upcast" using your spell slots.

I was thinking the same thing.  I don't mind casting them once a day, really.  I'll have a lot of other cool spells that need casting.

(in my own interpretation of the reading and understanding)

i believe you can only cast it as the way it reads from the racial, and you do NOT have it added to your spell list, unless you go ahead and pick the spells as per your warlock spells lsit.

once you do that, then you can start spending spell slots to upgrade it.... but i wouldn't really waste your spell picks on those if you already have them as a racial, even if you can't "boost" them with higher spell slots, most of the time you wont need to, as they'll be better options at higher levels that you want to save your higher spell slots for.

Of the three, the only one that really benefits from higher spell slots would be Hellish Rebuke. I'd say it's absolutely worthwhile to add that one to your list of known spells.

My take on it is it Would add to you spell list. Look at multiclassing as an example, any other class that you get a spell from, whether divine, innate sorcery from sorcerer it adds to your list. Racial suggests you have a much more innate understanding of that spell hence why it is a racial.

The overall system tries for a lot of synergy across all the classes ext, just seems fitting this would be the case here to.

Now for the bonus casting of the racial spell from your racial use, I would think you can't upgrade that particular casting, just has to be default.

I wonder why this isn't a more common question people have? Maybe it just doesn't affect much one way or the other, but it seems like it would be something that needs to be addressed fairly early in gameplay

Your Racial Spells can be cast as it says without using a spell slot but must use the Racial attribute. The spells are added to your spell sheet and you can cast them using your regular casting method.

A High Elf Battle Master gets the cantrip Blade Ward as a Racial Cantrip which uses Intelligence as the casting stat. He takes Magic Initiate (Wizard), gets Shocking Grasp and Mending as Cantrips, plus Shield. He can cast the cantrips as many times as he likes, but can only cast Shield once between Long Rests.

A High Elf Bard/Warlock, chooses the cantrip Mending as her Racial Cantrip, takes Magic Initiate Druid, gets Druidcraft, Guidance and Cure Wounds. She may cast Cure Woundsonce per between Long Rests without using a spell slot but uses Wisdom to cast this way, and she can also cast it using any spell slots using Charisma.

Tieflings make awesome Warlocks, Bards, Sorcerers and Paladins. As far as Wizardry is concerned they are pretty good at that as well. But obviously they are perfectly awesome at being any other class.

All Cantrips you know, you can cast at your Character Level.

Spells you cast without a spell slot are cast at Level.

If you choose to cast Hellish Rebuke, using a higher level spell slot, then you gain the damage increase as it says on the spell listing in the PHB.

You can cast any of your spells in higher spell slots, the Warlocks Pact slots are always at their highest spell level to a maximum of 5.

If I recall correctly it has been clarified by Jeremy Crawford that if you are a wizard and take magic initatie (wizard) you will add the level 1 spell to your spell book. In that case you can cast it 1/day without a spell slot, but you can also prepare it just like any other spell in the spell book and cast with slots. It would make sense to me if something similar works out to give all tiefling warlocks the ability to use hellish rebuke with spell slots.

Thanks Be3A12

Its Jeremy Crawfords comment about Magic Initiate.

Ultimately it's about fun, it's also your fantasy game. So it's fine to be restrictive, but it's not broken to permit this.

If you gain 2 Cantrips and a 1st level Spell from Magic Initiate, it's pretty similar to a racial ability.

You want to run a Low or Weak or Rare Magic game, then a blanket NO to adding the spells, you can then only cast them as stated, obviously 2 Cantrips.

You want to run a regular D&D game, then do as Jeremy Crawford says. Why? Well it might tempt a Battle Master, or an Assassin to maybe multiclass and take a level or two of a magic using class, if it fits their character concept. It might be useful to a magic using class as well. It gives more options, adds interest and fits the spirit of a fantasy game.

Each turn you get an Action, what you do with it is your choice. A level 5 Tiefling Eldritch Knight with a Criminal Background called 'Mack the Knife' has the Extra Attack feature. He is in front of the party facing a rather upset Sea Hag.

What shall he do with his Action? He could Throw Daggers as a Ranged Attack, then move and take an Extra Attack or he can Cast a single spell. Admittedly Firebolt, now does 2d10 damage, but he could cast Magic Missile or Burning Hands as 1st level spells instead. Alternatively he could cast Hellish Rebuke as a 2nd Level Spell (3D10 damage) (using his reaction) For his action uses Firebolt or he could cast Darkness, then make a tactical withdrawal.
