When I make a character a look at my Shelf Of Miniatures,  Wait till a character storey pops up.  Then create the character.

As you can see a have a few Tiefling minitures (Reaper if you want to know manufaturer)

I have not seen a race/Tiefling guide so I decided to try my hand at makeing one.

I will look into the 'how to make a guide' guide at a later date to get the formating and colors that everyone is used to so If I gett good comments and suggestions I will reformat the guide.  In the mean time Fire Resistance is not fire proof.  Flames still hurt so please be kind.

SInce most ratings are based on what will help/affect the character's CLASS, This guide will be mostly my thoughts, feeling and ideas on the race.

Thank you in advance.

THE RACE:

1)  Ability Score: Will list Bonus here.  My thoughts will be in next section.

     +1 INT

     +2 CHA

2)  Age:

     Comparable to humans.

3)  Alignment

     Tendency toward evil.

     Inclined towards Chaotic.

Nowhere is there a mandatory or required alignment.

4)  Size

     You are a Medium creature.

5)  Speed

     You get 30 Feet

6)  Darkvision

Can see 60 feet in DIM LIGHT as if it was Day Light.

Can see 60 feet in DARKNESS (Not the spell) as if it was Dim Light.

7)  Hellish Resistance

You take half damage from fire

YOU ARE FIRE RESISTANT NOT FIRE PROOF.

8)  Infernal Legacy

Level 1 you know the Thaumaturgy cantrip

Level 3 you can cast Hellish Rebuke

Level 5 you can cast Darkness

Cast the spells once per day using CHA as the spell casting stat.

THOUGHT:  Concerning races with spell casting (Not just Tiefling).  If a race has a spell casting feature,  I can understand using CHA.  I can understand once per day.  I do not understand 'casting' the spell.  A Tiefling Fighter or Barbarian with no inclination or experience with magic and 8 - 10 INT (under 13 so cannot multi into or out of WARLOCK) and NO spell slots, instantly knows how to cast spells requiring Verbal, Material and Somatic components.  In my opinion the race should be able to use the spell as a bonus action with no components

9)  Language

     Common

     Infernal

STATS:

As you can see in the image in the original post, I have some melee based characters but the melee based stats (STR/DEX) do not get a stat boost.  IF you focus on one it will take you 3 stats bump ups to get to the limit cap of 20 (15+2+2+1 = 20)

So  with a melee class, if you can live with the slightly lower starting score or possibly not reaching 20 any time soon (or at all)  a melee based Tiefling is playable.

STRENGTH:  8-10 for a dump stat or 15 for a strength based attack stat

DEXTERITY:  8-10 for a bump stat or 15 for a dexterity based attack stat

CONSTITUTION:  10+ to avoid HP/Skill/Check penalty OR higher to fit to taste.  (Not saying you cannot use 8-9 if you want)

INTELIGENCE:  8 (+1=9) - 9 (+1=10) for a dump stat or 15 (+1=16) for an Int based spell caster and just get the +3 bonus all those Level 1 INT caster get

WISDOM:    10+ to avoid Skill/Check penalty OR higher to fit to taste (PERCEPTION).(Not saying you cannot use 8-9 if you want)

CHARISMA:  8 (+2=10) for a dump stat or 14 (+2=16) / 15 (+2=17) for Charisma based spell casting bonus..

The stats arrays I usually use are:

15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8

and

15, 15, 13, 10, 10, 8

For a melee character I can have 15 in attack stat and 14/15 in Constitution leaving me the 13 to place in a stat to allow Multi-classing or a bonus to Skill/Checks in another stat.  (15 if placed in CHA).

For an INT caster 15 in Intelligence (+1=16) to get the +3 for spell casting

For a WIS caster 15 in Wisdom (same 3 stat bumps to get to 20 as a melee stat)

For CHA casters 15 in Charisma(+2=17) for the +3 to casting stat allowing a +CHA feat or a +1/+1 stat bump to get you to 18 at first bump up.

One odd property of Tiefling is that they have bumps at dump stats, so if you gonna optimize, one of stats is going to waste in any case.
