Any advice for what 3 cantrips I should pickup for the tome feature?

Guidance is one of, if not the best cantrip in the game.

Mold Earth has a lot of potential for burrowing through walls and digging pits, depending on what your DM defines as "loose earth".

Message is really nice to have if you like sneaking around a lot.

Minor Illusion is a top-tier cantrip, and Mage Hand is really useful, but those two are already on the Warlock list.

Vicious Mockery?

Shillelagh?

We already have a cleric with guidance.

Mold earth sounds interesting. Is that in Unearthed Arcana? We don't have any of the additional books yet.

Vicious Mockery is one I have considered, but have often wondered if it is worth taking up one of my turns when I could be blasting with Eldritch blast where I get my stat bonus or using a spell. So I've heavily considered utility cantrips.

I also picked up the invocation where I can cast silent image at will. That will often take up one of my turns.

I currently plan on running a pure warlock, and have just hit lvl 3 and am of the fey pact. If any of that matters.

Those 2 for sure:

- guidance

- vicious mockery

Then some generally useless spell for the rare need and the RP flavor:

thorn whip to cause OA damage

- light/dancing light if you don't have darkvision

- druidcraft/prestidigitation/thaumaturgy

- resistance/spare the dying, maybe?

Not shillelagh, it loses its value at level 5.

I would choose:

  1. Guidance
  2. Vicious Mockery
  3. Shocking Grasp

You already have some of the best ones in Mage Hand, Minor Illusion, Prestidigitation and Eldritch Blast.

Never used Guidance, although I know how powerful it can be

Thorn Whip to pull attackers off walls/into wells or into spells or use in Melee with no disadvantage as a backup to E Blast (One Cantrip to pull, the other to push, you become controller-ey)

Mould Earth for more fun Utility. Intimidate by litterelly digging a grave next to them or start swirling loose earth around their feet and slowly make it climb up their legs. Mould some better handholds for climbing depending on what you are climbing. Dig amush pits, moats and fortify your campsite for the night or just simply raise some loose earth to give you half cover when loosing your blasts. It gets a poor to bad rep in a lot of the guides but I really like that one and use it all the time. That plus thorn whip if time to set up ambushes can be a fun combo

V. Mockery is a good debuff and needing a Wisdom save may be easier to land. If you are worried about the damage, you could always add Hex.

Sacred Flame is a decent pickup as a Tomelock, as it ignores cover and is a save spell, making it useful when stuck in melee.

You should pick cantrips (& other spells/feats/etc) that fit:

A) the character you want to play

B) that fit the game/campaign you're playing

You might also consider choices that reflect the needs of the party & how your character has grown. Sometimes these will conflict with A.

I'm having a little trouble grasping your example.

How do you cover a PC who may be more than a 5 feet cube with a 5 foot cube illusion + peep hole?

How do 2 bugbears that already know the fighter is there, suddenly gain disadvantage to attack when they can just chop the fighters legs off?

What am I missing? Is this a RAW v RAI loophole? Am I not suspending my disbelief enough? Is the fighter a dwarf or sitting down?

Genuinly interested. Thanks for your further clarification.

Ps definately agree with Mould Earth and Thorn Whip. After Mage Hand they are personal faves if I can get them for any build of mine.

My thoughts, keeping in mind you have a cleric with guidance and the silent image invocation.

1. Melee-friendly cantrip: shillelagh (OAs, works w/ magic staff), thorn whip (pull), vicious mockery (debuff), shocking grasp (escape, good v. metal), sacred flame (save, no cover)

2. Party face/sneak/lockpicker cantrips: Guidance (for when cleric is not near, when two allies need guidance at same time), message (for sneaky communication), mage hand (for safe pickpocketing, trap disarming)

3. Fun cantrip: prestidigitation, mould earth, light, dancing lights, one more from #1 or #2

Tempest

Thanks for the education. That helps clear things up for me.

A general question on Thorn Whip.

If I pull an enenmy within range off a ledge/wall do they fall directly down or can I pull them a further 5 feet towards me and away from the bittom of the wall?

(Sorry. Dont wish to veer this thread off course.)

Guidance from multiple casters stacks unless I'm missing something. Shape Water can move a cube of water into position (balanced on a corner, of course), freeze it, and have it ready to push over onto something. Most targets won't survive impact from a 3.5 ton ice cube. You can also use these same uce cubes to block a narrow passage.

I like Shape Water as well but has less uses then something like Mold Earth. Depends on how many cantrips you have. I have a PC with 9 so I can accommodate that. Used ME loads but unfortunately have yet to find an opportunity to use Shape Water. Obviously much stronger in a naval/waterway themed campaign.

And as I said above, even if you rule in every possible way against Minor Illusion being used this way, it still works at least for the first attack for one foe. There's no way to make it "worse" than Vicious Mockery at this specific job without actually changing how either cantrip works.

I'd love it if Vicious Mockery was a bit closer to Dissonant Whispers in terms of its effect, personally, but then it'd have to be compared to other movement-related cantrips, like Ray of Frost or Thorn Whip.
