| #1EarthdawnJun 12, 2015 9:00:30 | I am playing the newest incarnation of my D&D paladin. She's been around since 3rd edition and seems to work nicely in each edition; With 5th being no expection.
Short synopsis of her: Aasimar paladin of Sune; People see her as more of an avatar. Granted nobility by my first GM (at the start of the first session), which flavored her whole personality. In 5th edition, I gave her the Noble background (which was amazingly accurate) and went with the outlook on life that she has a duty to protect the people (her people) and secretly she does believe that the World revolves around her (get told something for long enough, even you believe it to be true). Despite having an abundance of self-worth complexes, she is a kind and decent person, so takes the role as paladin well. Her duties as a sovereign leader and a paladin of Sune are quite separate in her mind (since Sune's dogma isn't the typical paladin fare).
My conundrum: None of the oaths, by themselves, seem fitting for a Paladin of Sune.
Devotion - I like the mechanics of this one best. Immunity to charm seems fitting for a follower of Sune, and the magic weapon and holy nimbus features seem rather awesome.
Ancients - This choice is super combatible with Sune, but she has absoluely nothing to do with Nature deities. The undying sentinel feature is awesome for a follower of Sune to have (who doesn't want to be young and beautiful forever?), but the last feature and having access to that spell list is a little off-putting.
Vengeance - She gets upset/angry quite easily (must be the red hair) so this is the most RP fitting, but mechanically a little drab for my tastes. Also, she has a good tactical mind and wouldn't get so caught up on one enemy. Also, I don't see her with wings when using the ultimate.
The point may be moot, as I am assuming the game and/or my character will last long enough to hit level 20, but I still would like to get advice or votes for my upcoming choice. The GM offering to tweak around an Oath a bit for me, but if we can't agree on a solution, I need to have a firm choice in mind.
Thanks in advance, and may Sune grace you with a beautiful day! |

| #3YunruJun 12, 2015 9:31:04 | Would a Warlock fit instead? But yeah, devotion. |
| #4dbsquirlJun 12, 2015 9:33:58 | Remember that the fluff is potentially mutable. You could have the mechanics of Devotion, but because of the nature of the deity your actual oath might look more like the Ancients one. Given that it's such a long-standing and oft-replayed character, your GM is hopefully likely to give you some wiggle room in the fluff. |
| #5melloredJun 12, 2015 9:37:46 | You can also simply ask your DM to change out the spell lists of ancients to something that fits better. |

| #8drizzt_zyloJun 12, 2015 16:37:48 | If you do a search on Google for homebrew archetypes for 5th edition DND you may find something that may need to be tweeked to be more or less powerful but may fit your concept/flavor |
| #9BRJNJun 12, 2015 18:53:43 | Fluff is infinitely mutable. Just do not change the mechanics.
My Ancients Paladin has been re-fluffed to be an oath to Civilization. For instance, instead of the Channel Divinity creating brambles to Restrain my target, I put him in handcuffs. Yah, the XYZ Animal spells are useless to me too. So I ignore them. OTOH, Moonbeam blocks confined spaces and Misty Step makes it hard to escape me by running.
Would a Paladin of Sune, casting Plant Growth, get a suddenly-blooming flowerbed? Or maybe some rose bushes? |
