Hey all,

I'm kinda confused as to how exactly the Poisoner's Kit works. I have a Rogue-Assassin and i've been meaning to buy the kit, so I looked it up in the PHB last night and i'm not sure I really understand it.

1) First off, you have to train to have proficiency with it correct? I mean, you can't choose this as a proficiency over thieves tools or another skill?

2) To create the poison you have to roll something (assuming the DM decides this, probably Dex?), then if you are successful how much poison do you make? And do you use up any components?

3) Do you also have to roll to apply the poison later on?

I noticed if you purchase the vial of poison it doesn't say anything about having to roll to apply it.

I'd probably home rule this. Int check + proficency with poisoners kit.

Depending on how rare the animal is, and how dangerous the poison, I would just increase the DC.

Roll d20 + Int + Prof Bonus

DC 5 - Common Animal

DC 10 - Uncommon animal

DC 15 - Rare animal

DC 20 - Very Rare Animal

DC 25 - Legendary / Unknown Animal

Up to your DM to set the DC

Per DC increase I may change the amount of time it takes to extract the poison though. I think the days per 5 gold cost will slow down the game. Basically eliminating anyones ability to do this if they are in a campaign world that is atleast semi-fast paced.

Just a thought. But maybe per 10 above the DC you roll, you get an extra use of the poison.

Example.

DC 5 poison extraction from a common snake.

Jimmy rolls and get a 15. he has 2 uses of that poison.

Ok so I got to look at my DM's DMG and found the pages about the advanced poisons. That helped a lot. It tells you what types there are, whether they are ingested, contact, imjury, etc., as well as DCs and effects. And the downtime is in the PHB under crafting. Thanks again.
