Greetings,

At your table, do you every see anybody use versatile weapons... in a versatile way?

Very player I have either needs a 1 handed weapon, or a 2 handed weapon. The value of switching back and forth is beyond us.

Thoughts?

I have another pc who plays a champion, who normaly uses dueling with a shield, but when its obvious we need more offense, or the monsters are not particularly damaging and so extra defense isn't needed. Then  he drops the shield and goes verastile for the extra damage.

I think this is somewhat unique feature for the champion who gets two fighting styles.

The only other thing that comes to mind is finding a magic longsword.   Lets say your playing a great weapon style fighter or barbarian.  But you want to use the magic sword you just found, so you use the magic longsword in two hands, over a mundane greatsword.

I can't think of why else.

Versatile weapons are one-handed regardless of how you use them. So there's that. Kinda edge case though.

I haven't seen any versatile weapons being used two-handed myself, but conceivably, any situation where you might need a free hand at a moments notice would be a reason to  do so. Grappling comes to mind. Availability of magic weapons may also be a changer. Say you have the Great Weapon Fighting fighter class feature. You normally prefer your nonmagical greatsword, but you've got a +1 longsword as well, and you're fighting gargoyles.

One of my favorite characters used a Bastard Sword in Pathfinder. When I converted him to 5th I gave him a long sword so he could use it the same way. One handed when he needed to carry something, a torch or a bag for example, and two handed when I wanted to increase the damage output.

- Grappling

- Eldritch Knights, Bards, Warlocks and Arcane Tricksters sometimes need an open-hand for casting

- Using Items/Devices

- Sign Language

- High Fives

Take the Dual Wielder feat.  Use a Longsword and Javelin.  Attack with the sword, bonus action throw the javelin, then attack two-handed with the sword and finally draw a new javelin (if just for the +1 AC).

This is also a useful combination for a Ranger.  Battleaxe + handaxe for your axe happy dwarven Ranger.  Usually you use two weapon fighting, but when it comes time to use Conjure Barrage you throw handaxe and then use your Extra Attack to make a two-handed swing with the battleaxe.

Monk using a quarterstaff or a spear 2h for more damage (he can still use legs for unarmed strikes), switch to 1h when they need to use throw weapons(jawelins).

Yeah, Monk using 2H is the big one.

Also, a sword & board type who isn't being attacked can drop his shield and get that extra little umph.  (I do this all the time in another game, The One Ring, that has a similar feature.)

I play a fighter that does as one poster mentioned above, using the weapon in one hand while wielding a shield but sometimes using it in two hands (whenever I feel I don't need the bonus of the shield, or when I don't feel I have an action to spend to put the shield to use).

In the campaigns that I run, however, the versatile property is more of a boon to me as the DM because it means that I can include a weapon and have greater chance that someone is excited about it because, for example, one of the fighters might use a longsword one-handed alongside a shield or two-handed as they wield their pickaxe or maul, or pike, and the wizard will also gladly use a longsword two-handed if its magical effects were potent enough for the player to feel her character would use the powerful sword rather than her grandmother's sword which she treasures - and later in the campaign the wizard might wield a sword one-handed if she finds a magic staff that grants a passive benefit if she keeps it in hand.
