War cleric ideas

I want to make a battle cleric using the war domain. The goal is to be a competent front line combatant while providing support and the occasional mid combat heal to my party. I know Healbots are not needed so I feel I can give up some healing potential but some groups just need a little extra. This will be an AL character so those guidelines must be followed.

The problem is that I would like to have 2 attacks by 10th level which requires that I multiclass into Barbarian, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger or Warlock for 5 levels. Any ideas of what may make a good character that works well with the clerics Wisdom and War Domain? I may be able to get Gauntlets of Ogre Power to help with MAD but it's not guaranteed. I intent to go the Great weapon route and will take the GWM feat at some point. Rest is pretty open.

Basically I feel spoiled for options so I need som help to make a good argument one way or another.

Are there any ways to get a second attack I missed?

Can you think of any synergies that might be worth more than a 5 level dip?

I will want a 20 wisdom by the time I get a 4th stat bump option so that may play into starting stats.

I look forward to any ideas you guys might have.

Thanks,

If you take variant human and pick up shillelagh from the druid spells using a feat then you avoid MAD by using a staff and shillelagh with WIS for your attack stat.  If you pick up pole arm master and use the staff one handed you have a staff'n'shield build that gives great AC, a bonus action attack (does conflict with the domain ability), and an increase in opportunity attacks.

If you take 6 levels of bard for the valor bard you won't lose any of your spell slots on the MC chart and bards have some good spells from which to select.  If you are dedicated to great weapon master this is probably the better way for you to go because you'll still have the bonus action attack from your cleric domain, but in my experience a person needs to be careful on the MAD and great weapon master isn't so great without advantage.  At least the big hit bonus for channel divinity can help there.

Any multiclassing for an extra attack would cost you avatar of battle so the pole arm is a good option for consistent bonus action attacks.

You basically want to build a Paladin.

A battle Cleric is something that's defensive but casts Spirit Guardians + Spiritual Weapon and just rolls over every encounter.

i agree, paladin. thay have all the key healing spells and multi-attack.
valor bard is another option, all the key healing spells and full slots.
moon druid is yet another option, multi-attack as a bear, and again, healing spells.
clerics are the best healers, not the only healers.

^True.  Though i'd reccomend insperational leader for the paladin.

Or you could be a fighter with the healer and insperational leader feat and add plenty of HP to your party.  Though you don't get the resurection and restoration spells.

Hmmh. Difficult.

I believe as a main melee combatant, being a paladin indeed seems the best option. Heavy armor, high damage and so on.

The war domain has many perks (others disagree), so multiclass paladin/war cleric is not the worst idea. But if melee should be your preference, make strength you highest stat. Make up for lost paladin abilites by having much higher level and much more spells for smiting.

My advise: Paladin 5, War cleric 5 and then go on as you wish. Strength 16, wisdom 14, Con 14, Cha 14. Easily doable as Half elf with the default array. Also doable with point buy and any race giving +2 to strength.

If Wisdom 20 is your priority, i guess swapping str and wisdom is not so bad. Channel divinity from paladin helps with hitting, also channel divinity of the war cleric. Only problem, you can only do one of those, not both in the same encounter per multiclass rules. Cleric 6 helps with that.

From a purely RP stance, a religious fighter (EK) with one level of War Cleric and the Healer feat would be fairly effective. He's not much of a cleric statistically, but he's an expert as butt-kicking and he can patch you up afterwards, too.

You guys make some good points. I am thinking for the feel of what I am trying to achieve I will go Fighter 2, then cleric for a while. Maybe return to finish 3 more levels of fighter if I miss the extra attack.  There seems to be a lack of leader classes in AL and I am trying to fill the gap in my area and maybe inspire some people to pick up a Holy Symbol or a Lute and have fun with it.
