| #1Matau99Feb 15, 2015 10:38:14 | (This is actually my first post, and I'm a tad nervous, but here I go!)
So, I was thinking about how to maximize the damage a high-level wizard can do with cantrips, and thus use all their spell slots for more interesting things.
- Wizard (Evoker) 14/Warlock (any) 2/anything 1. I'd go Rogue 3 (Assassin) to maximize damage (advantage on anyone who hasn't gone yet! Crits on anyone who's surprised!), or just stay Wizard the rest of the way to maximize utility (Wish. Game over.)
- You need eldritch blast, and the Eldritch Invocation agonizing blast. I'd also get repelling blast, for the kiting potential, but the second is up to you.
- You need at least Cha 20 and Int 20. You can get this in many ways (Tiefling or variant human are probably the easiest).
Here's how it works:
- As an evoker (from Empowered Evocation), you add your intelligence modifier to the damage your evocation spells do on a hit. Because you make a separate attack roll for every hit, you add it to all four of them.
- With agonizing blast, you add your Charisma modifier to the damage your agonizing blast does on a hit. Because you make a separate attack roll for every hit, you add it to all four of them.
- Finally, as an evoker (Overchannel), you can maximize the damage, but if you keep doing that, you suffer damage per level of the spell. Because cantrips are level 0, you'll never take any damage. That's a total of [(1d10+5+5)*4] all maximized. Oh, and it's force damage, so only the Helmed Horror is immune.
In conclusion, it looks like being a high-level evoker might actually be the best specialization for utility wizards, because of how crazy their cantrips get.

Even if you're not overchanneling, that's still 44 damage minimum, 80 max, with an average of 62.
Though I feel like there should be a way to maximize it...

Beginning at 10th level, you can add your Intelligence modifier to the damage roll of any wizard evocation spell you cast.
I'm not sure a warlock cantrip qualifies as a wizard evocation spell....

| #7YunruFeb 15, 2015 11:34:46 | Eldritch Blast, Agonizing Blast and Hex still outdoes it though. |

Mike Mearls @mikemearls
Overchannel questions: Not intended to work with cantrips, but it works out if you increase the damage by 1d12 per cantrip
