| #1SquadAug 19, 2014 13:02:46 | I'm creating a Warlock, with the Great Old One patron, and the Pact of the Chain. I could use some feedback on my spell selection for spell levels 1-5 (i.e. the spells that refresh after a short rest).
I plan on getting Invocations that improve Eldritch Blast, and would typically use my concentration on Hex to augment it in combat (at least when I'm not facing a mob). So my spell selection below focuses on a few spells for dealing with mobs, and mostly on non-combat utility. I plan on being the face for the party, so there are quite a few spells to charm/control others.
Here's what I have so far: 5th - Hold Monster 4th - Evard's Black Tentacles 3rd - Dispel Magic 2nd - Detect Thoughts, Suggestion 1st - Charm Person, Hex
Here are a few others where I could use help deciding between 2-3 options: 4th - Dimension Door or Misty Step or Counterspell (I know these aren't all 4th level) 3rd - Fear or Hypnotic Pattern 1st - Armor of Agathys or Hellish Rebuke
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, including any you think I've selected that are too weak, or any really good spells I've missed. Thanks! |

| (Reply to #2)Squad | I think I'll go for Misty Step to solve the problem of getting based by a melee enemy when I usually want to use ranged spell attacks. So here are the 2 things I'm still deciding between:
Armor of Agathys versus Hellish Rebuke. Armor will punish melee attacks on me, and give me some temp HP's to absorb the damage, but with Misty Step, I'm not sure whether to take Armor. It could still be useful for the initial melee attack (that is - enemy moves into melee and attacks, and only after do I get to use Misty Step). But I do hope to stay out of melee range.
Although I like Hellish Rebuke, I'd probably use the Entropic Ward feature to use a reaction to impose disadvantage on the first attack coming my way. So it would have to be an attack that hits after that to trigger the Hellish Rebuke, which probably wouldn't be uncommon. So I'm still conflicted on that choice.
As for Fear versus Hypnotic Pattern, both are nice for AoE control. Fear makes those affected drop what they're holding, and spend their actions moving away. Hypontic Pattern incapacitates the targets, which is a better effect, though others can spend an action to shake them out of it. They seem fairly similiar to me, unless one has a definite strength or weakness I've overlooked. |
