| #1Deius1022Aug 24, 2014 9:33:36 | I assumed this topic would have been asked, but i didnt find it. Possibly its just a really dumb question, haha. How many spell slots do warlocks get. It says at 5th level they have 2- 3rd level slots. But is that all they have? At level 20, can the warlock really only cast 4 spells? 4 cantrips, and 8 invocations? At 5th level the sorcerer can cast 14 spells (5-0, 4-1, 3-2,and 2-3) The warlock can cast 5? (3-0, and 2-3) Or can they cast 12 (3-0, 3-1, 4-2, 2-3)? which seems excessive. Anyway, if this has been answered, could somebody please let me know? thank you Deius |

Warlock Pact Magic slots are refreshed on a short rest rather than on a long one, so although they have fewer slots they get them back a lot faster.
In a day with three short rests, a Warlock can cast six spells a third level, plus three invocations (which could be used at-will, or once per day, or not be spells at all) whereas a wizard can cast only two third-level spells, three second-level spells and four first-level spells. The wizard may use Arcane Recovery to recover an additional third-level spell, for a total of 3 + 2 + 4 = 9, so the wizard gets more spells, but the Warlock gets more high-level spells.
With fewer short rests, the Warlock is worse off, with more, the Warlock is better off.
It might also be worth pointing out that if the Warlock takes Agonising Blast then they will be able to fire two blasts doing 1D10 + Cha Mod damage at will, which is better than a Wizard can do. They *also* get their pact boons and *also* get better weapon and armour proficiencies.
Not saying it totally balances, but Warlocks look particularly poor if you overlook the fact that Pact Magic comes back every Short Rest. |

-Exhaustion is NASTY and there's essentially no way to get rid of it, although there are ways to mitigate its effects to some degree (e.g., Enhance Ability). The fact that it only goes away with a long rest is pretty nasty. I'd consider making at least the first level of it go away on a short rest, though if so I might hand it out a bit more often. -Having items or spells that could drop your exhaustion level by 1 or, at the better end, give you the benefit of a rest would be pretty cool, and make sense.
DM: "You find a small metal flask."
PC: "I examine it closely."
DM: "It appears to be silver, with a light blue border."
PC: "Anything else?"
DM: "When you look closely at it, you see that there's a picture of a bull's head done in red...."

"Additionally, when you gain a level in this class, you can choose one of the warlock spells you know and replace it with another spell from the warlock spell list, which also must be of a level for which you have spell slots."
Could a Warlock then replace a 1st level known spell with a 5th level spell starting at 9th level and above?
For example, at 9th level, gain access to 5th level spell slots and gain a spell. Could I gain Hold Monster (a 5th level spell) and choose one of my lower level spells and replace it with Dominate Person (which is also 5th level)?
It seems like it would work this way given the quote above and how Warlock spell slots work.
