| #1crusadereaverAug 08, 2015 13:41:42 | I wanted to make a class option that could be similar to the dragonslayers from "Fairy Tail". I went with monk becuase of the possibility of brawling with it because that what i like more abot the dragonslayers then going in a caster direction.
~~Way of the Dragon Slayer: Monks who follow this path have used training and ki to gain abilities that mimic some of what the powerful creatures known as dragons can do. They can also use these abilities to combat these great beasts, truly fighting fire with fire.

Damage Type Breath Weapon Acid 5 by 30 Ft. Line (Dex Save) Cold 15 Ft. Cone (Con Save) Fire Choice of 15 Ft. Cone or 5 by 30 Ft Line (Dex Save for Both) Lightning 5 by 30 Ft Line (Dex Save) Poison 15 Ft Cone (Con Save) |
| #3jaappletonAug 08, 2015 17:16:37 | It's ridiculously overpowered. The level 3 feature granting immunity for a Ki point? Sorcerers have to spend a Sorcerer Point for resistance, and their points don't replenish on a short rest. And your lv6 feature? Now every attack does Dex and Wisdom damage. That means at lv20, with Dex and Wis maxxed, every punch does 10 damage without ever rolling the damage die. So that's 30 damage, static, without damage dice, and also without flurry of blows. |
| #4crusadereaverAug 08, 2015 18:17:45 | I gave immunity with healing because it fit well with concept and because in my experience playing, immunity is really nothing ,creatures have multiple styles of attack usually and when I have had it in a game my dms often altered creatures accordingly. If I had fire immunity the spells or creatures used agianst me would often use a totally different type of damage. As for the damage bonus if you are a lv 20 bladelock ,maxed abbility scores, with lifestealing blade invocation you will have 10 damage before damage rolls. Maybe I should make it incompatible with flurry of blows ,that might be an option. For a fix to not steal from sorcerer to much I would just make the lv11 ability not affect spells but some overlap is going to happen anyway when resistance or dragon like is involved. The dragon breath I made the same for all, in terms of save, range, and damage ,on purpose so it was different from the dragonborns breath. That way a dragonborn could use both with differences. A reduction in damage might be in order from my original ,maybe 6d6 would be better. Also as a more limiting option for it make it only usable again after a long rest. |

| #6crusadereaverAug 09, 2015 12:57:41 | Here are some changes using the suggestions given in this thread.
~~Way of the Dragon Slayer: Monks who follow this path have used training and ki to gain abilities that mimic some of what the powerful creatures known as dragons can do. They can also use these abilities to combat these great beasts, truly fighting fire with fire.
Dragon Body: At 6th level, you are able to imbue your physical strikes with the elemental fury of your inner dragon. You can now choose to have your unarmed attacks deal your chosen damage instead of bludgeoning damage. If one of these non bludgeoning unarmed attacks hit you can spen 1 ki point to deal an extra 1d10 damage of your chosen type.
Dragon Mind: Starting at 11th level, your mastery over your draconic fury has imbued you with the ability to penetrate even the most stalwart of defenses; whenever you deal damage of your chosen type; from attacks or features not spells, you are able to bypass resistance with said damage type damageing them as if they did not have resistance. Also those creatures that have immunity to that type now have resistance to said damage type agianst you.

| #7LasteEnygmaAug 09, 2015 14:40:42 | Instead of limiting yourself on "Dragon Body" for how it can/can't be used with fury of blows, why not have it give the ability of "Fangs of the Fire Snake" without the reach. So pop 1 ki point, deal 1d10 of chosen damage. Keep the max ki points you can spend the same as the discipline. If you wanted at will "fiery fists" possibly just allow "Dragon Body" to allow you to switch between bludgeoning damage and fire damage at will.
That way you can get your extra damage in for a cost of course, and also have your fiery fists whenever you need em. Just some thoughts, great concept! |
| #8crusadereaverAug 09, 2015 12:58:36 | Thats a good idea. Edited to include it. |
| #9daspianAug 09, 2015 16:46:41 | Dragon Breath: Starting at 17th level you can now use a breath weapon attack that deals your chosen damage type at a cost of 5 ki points. This attack is a 15 ft cone and those that would be affected are granted a dexterity save. The attack does 6D6 damage and half of that on a successful save. After using this feature it cannot be reused until after a long rest.
the reason i had suggested the other version that was a copy-paste of the Dragonborn Racial dragon breath is due to the fact that certain breaths are different sizes and shapes
for instance, it makes much more sense to have Dex be the saving throw against "dodging" out of the way of a fiery breath but it doesn't make much sense dodging poison gas, instead it's a Con Save to resist it's toxic fumes.
also, i don't understand the Dragon Body, as a reaction you spend 1 HD to heal now, but then have to wait until a short rest to use it again... when a short rest i can just go about spending my HD to heal anyways?
idk, i just think for a feature, which you have very few of, it should be something umm grand and flashy, maybe instead of just spending a HD and healing, also the HD spending mechanic while i admire you trying to get something new and creative, doesn't really fit thematically for that feature.
what if instead of as a reaction you can spend a HD and heal.. it's you can spend a HD and do some other effect, something more for a lack of a better term draconic in flavor. |
| #10LasteEnygmaAug 10, 2015 0:29:01 | This alternative might not be flashy, but maybe for Dragon Soul you could have resistance as normal but when you are hit by your damage type, you become "empowered" and gain advantage on your next attack roll. (I'm reaching for ALL attacks on your next turn but I don't know if that would be pushing it. How often would it come up anyway?) |
| #11daspianAug 09, 2015 18:05:22 | mmm that would be a bit much because if your damage type is fire (which is one of the most common damage types) you're pretty much getting advantage 24/7 then.
perhaps something along the lines of as a reaction you can spend 1 Ki Point to harness some of that draconic energy and fuel yourself, gaining 1d8 hit points, essentially providing the healing method you want, but without the HD sacrifice method an instead through Ki Points. |
| #12crusadereaverAug 09, 2015 18:57:26 | The reason I made dragon breath a cone no matter the choice and made it a dex save was to not copy the dragonborn list exactly and because this would be somthing that is learned and mastered thru changing not something thier born with so it would be similar but different. The save to me is more rooted in reation; being able to dodge, putting your hand over your face before you inhale to much gas, were as a con save is more like you having the fortitude to resist what your being attacked with. But I do seee what you mean.
Dragon soul using the HD was a concession I made to use a system already in place then to create a new one and just throw ki points at something. Spending a HD to heal when you got hit by that damage but restricting it to once until a short rest didn't make you a self healing tank when faceing somthing that did your damage type, though ki points are limited you could consistently take that damage and heal to outlast many creatures except those that are very powerful in my opinion.
I like the advantage idea but it is to limiting in some cases and could be used to often in others. I was thinking that if it went the way of advantage make it like a barbarians rage in that it lasts a minute while successfully hitting and conscious but can not be used again until after a short or long rest. That might limit it enough but keep its trump card/overdrive feel, the flash so to speak. Also the advantage, to me, should stretch to all rolls in that minute makeing them more like dragons in power, but just giving it to attack would work to. I need to think this thru. |
