str 17 dex 11 con 12 int 17 wis 10 cha 11
Before racial modifiers, 1st lvl character. Eldritch knight would be good of course, but maybe other ideas to expand on that or something entirely different ? |
| #2AaronOfBarbariaSep 27, 2014 6:55:32 | My advice? Redefine "best" in this context to mean "whatever sounded like fun to do at the time." |
| #3DrycanthSep 27, 2014 7:20:49 | mountian dwarf wizard - scale mail and a battle axe that you are proficent in getting a bonus to HP via con and pushing up the str for those that try to close in with the "squishy caster"
but the most important thing is what sounds fun to play. weather or not the stats favor a class matters less than what you want to play. |

| #6LlenlleawgSep 27, 2014 8:29:52 | I think you are trying too hard. The only class that can directly make best use of those scores is a fighter who chooses eldritch knight. As said above, a wizard, esp. a mountain dwarf wizard, will be able to capitalize the most on the other scores (giving you both high Str and a strong Con), since you will be proficient in armor and axes. Anything eise either Int or Str based would be fine, if you don't mind that the other 17 won't be able to be levereged as much.
So, stick with (a) fighter (with probable EK subclass) or (b) wizard (ideally mtn. dwarf, or at least an elf to get use of swords, and so make use of the high Str). |

This is a smite build. First two levels pally, then the rest in Wizard (Abjuration school). You'll max out at 1 attack, but you can take War caster (at lvl 6) and attack with an off hand to get two attacks. You'll also get haste to cap off at three attacks, but three smite attacks a round isnt too bad! You'll be pretty tanky with Arcane Ward and Heavy Armor and Shield Spell. The other really nice thing of this build is that you'll get 5th lvl spells at lvl 10, a whole 7 levels sooners then a pure Pally. Arcane Recovery to get slots back for more smite is sexy. I also really like the idea of a tank casting the best countersells in the game, which you'll be doing at lvl 12 (adding your proficiency bonus to counterspell and dispel magic).
Stats at level 1: Str:18 Dex:11 Con:12 Int: 18 Wis: 10 Chr: 13
Build Progression up to lvl 16 Level One: Divine Sense, Lay on Hands Level Two: Pally Spells, Divine Smite, Fighting Style (I recomend Defense) Level Three: Wizard Spell, Arcane Recovery Level Four: Arcane Tradtion Abjuration, Arcane Ward, Second level Spell Slots Level Six: Feat War Caster, Third level Spell Slots Level Eight: Project Ward, Fourth Level Spell Slots Level Ten: +2 Str (to help land your smites!), Fifth Level Spell Slots (Max Smites GO!!!) Level Twelve: Improved Abjuration (boss Counterspells), Sixth Level Spell Slots Level Fourteen: +2 Int, or maybe Resilancy Constitution. Seventh Level Spell Slots Level Sixteen: Spell Resistance (advantage on spell saves, resistance on spell damage)
At level 10 you'll have three attacks (base, offhand, haste) Base +9 to hit dealing 1d6 (short swords) plus 6d8 (smite) for the first attack and 5d8 for the second and third attacks for a Total of 75.5 average damage. In plate armor with haste up youll have a 21 AC with shield at the ready. Also at lvl 10 your arcane ward will be a 20 HP buffer.
Pretty solid character imo.

| #9bidSep 27, 2014 19:27:59 | Human or half-elf would take care of both 17s. Mountain dwarf wizard is good cheese too. You are in a unique position for a useful tiefling or dragonborn.
Eldritch or wizard are the best fit, but you can go paladin if you bump your charisma.
