| #1seanyb47Sep 18, 2014 19:41:40 | What is the general concensus on how to approach gathering information within a city?
Examples:
|
| #2DireachSep 18, 2014 20:11:28 | I would say it falls under a Charisma check, as you use your people skills (and maybe a little pocket change) to get the information you want. The PHB seems to agree with this, noting under Charisma that other uses include "find the best person to talk to for news, rumors, and gossip", and "blend into the crowd to get a sense of key topics of conversation". I would probably be willing to give advantage on the roll if the character spoke the local language (assuming it's not Common), and/or if they successfully disguised themselves (Deception) to blend in better with the locals. |
| #3dwgautierSep 18, 2014 20:12:10 | Have the PC make an Int or Chr ability check based off of HOW they say they go about searching for the info. If they are piecing things together based off what locals have giving them then and Int check. If they are milking locals for answers then a Chr check. Thats what is great yet horrible about things in 5e. It is totally up to the player to be creative and the DM's to reward it. |

| #5seanyb47Sep 18, 2014 21:55:26 | Thanks all for the feedback! What's up with not being able to sell magic items? I only have the PHB so far; what's up with that? |
| #6SpedGuySep 18, 2014 22:37:26 | Oh you *can* sell them in practice, there is just no set market or prices for anything so very hard to not get cheated; and virtually no way to turn the wealth you might get back into other magic items. |
| #7Thank_DogSep 18, 2014 22:55:07 | Essentially you can sell magical items, it's just that there's no store for them because they're so uncommon and so expensive that there's basically no business incentive for it. There might be a black market trade in stolen magical items, or illegal magical items, or there might be certain nobles who are rich enough to be able to trade but even then, they're far more likely to want to keep them for themselves.

| #8PsikerlordSep 19, 2014 1:37:26 | This kinda thing is DMs call. Could be all kinds of things - pure role play, cha check, int check, background, history, setting, etc... |
| #9KeendkSep 19, 2014 5:02:05 | There are no magic item selling rules in the books, let's keep it at that shall we?
What stores exist, how rare items are etc. is ALL dependant on the setting and the DMs choice....NOT what edition is played. The rules assume that any magic item is a bonus on top of what is expected, so DMs should make corrections to the challenges accordingly, there's nothing in the players handbook that tells you that while playing 5e you must play with any of the suggestions Thank_Dog offered as far as I can tell. |
| #10SorxoresSep 19, 2014 5:24:18 | you could alway say investigation, but use Charisma instead of Intellect Which mean, if you are proficient with investigation, you are proficient, but add Cha instead of Int. you can alway change the stat require for a skill if you believe that for this specific activity a different stat might be more appropriate, even if the skill itself is very similar. |

| #12dwgautierSep 19, 2014 5:56:52 | Int checks for finding your way in a town totally makes sense. The BDF would have a really hard time getting around while the wizard makes quick work of it. |

Nope. Slightly subtle aggressiveness perhaps, but there was nothing passive about it.
Sure, I'll read more, could you quote me where I should find the rules you are referring to regarding the rarety of items and amount of magic shops? |

| #17ElderMagusSep 19, 2014 7:12:17 | Any manner of checks can be used for theses depending on the situation. A Charisma check could be used to 'find a person that may know something', a Wisdom check could prsetn a 'gut feeling' about where to start looking, or an Intelligence check could see the player 'Investigate' the town for clue, or even 'recall lore about a craft or trade' remembering mention about a potential black market for magic goods, or perhaps a rare collector.
Player creativity should be rewarded and the skills are purposely left vague so that solid narration and explanation of the player supercedes a specific verbiage of a check, locking a palyer to only pursuing a specific path. Set all the DC's the same and let the player choose how'd they'd like to find what your asking for, as long as it makes sense.

| #20KeendkSep 19, 2014 23:47:09 | I stand corrected, there is indeed a blurb about that in the PHB.
I'm truely sorry that I took five minutes of your life to make you feel good and superior about yourself in an internet argument. You deserve lieing down, it's hard being awesome.
Your interpretation of what passive aggressive means, and your suggestion that I have taken the first step to recover from my unknown condition has also made me a far better person than I deserve to be. Thank you for healing me.
