I play 3.5, so what's the difference between 3.5, 4, and 5?  Why should I spend more money?

4 is very different from 3.5.  More like D&D tactics.

 

5 is a much more balanced version of 3.5.

3.5 is a complex flexible system with more option then you could wish for

 

4e is a standardize version where EVERYONE is the same

 

5e is a casual friendly version of 3.5 (with mixture of 1, 2 and 4e) very simple to learn and use, but still offer the possibilities for flexibility, and options.

 

if you like 3.5 then stay with 3.5. If you want to try a completly different game but within a similar system, then change to 4e. If you want a easier to play version of 3.5 then change to 5e

3.5.: Extreme number of options, very complicated, math-heavy, extremely unbalanced

4: Essentially a (good) small scale minatures fighting game. Extremely balanced considering it's still an rpg.

5: Smaller number of options, less complicated than even AD&D 2nd and its predecessors (while still having a higher number of options), quite balanced.

 

Essentially 5E is the spiritual follower of AD&D 2nd, 3/3.5E was D&D for the build and numbers afficionados dominating at that time, 4E was the D&D for CRPG fans.

So, in your opinion.  What is more enjoyable and is worth spending money to get more books.  I'm tired of spending money since after 2nd edition!

You can try 5e for free here.  It's full 1-20 levels, though only a few races/classes.

 

You can then decide if you want to spend more on the PHB for extra options.

 

 

They will add more free monsters at some point in the next few months as well.

I have been playing 3.5 for a long time now, did not like 4E.  I think 5E is very similar to 3.5.
