"When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the initial damage increases by 1d12 for each slot level above 1st."

Is the word 'initial' used for the base damage of the spell or for the first turn in which the spell is used.
I am the type of person who loves casting lower spells at higher levels, so I'm wondering if that means this spell cast at level 9 can do a maximum of 18d12 damage or a maximum of 90d12 damage.

It means the initial hit, not the damage on later turns.

While i agree that RAW is only the intital hit.  I really don't think that's intentional.

I suggest you houserule it to be +1d12/level for each instance as well.

It will still be a weak spell (since damage now is better then damage later), but it at least keeps some niche applications.

the thing I dont like about witchbolt is it is far too easy to avoid. more beyond 30' and it ends automatically.

I was really disappointed with this spell. When I read the name I thought it would be some awesome damage bolt that does a cool hex/debuff on the enemy,

Then I read and saw its actually a channel spell that just repeats piddly damage each round.

Witch Bolt really is a terrible spell. I thought about getting it for my sorcerer and Twinned Spell but even then, keeping two targets within 30-ft. isn't going to be very viable.

If you extend the range on the initial casting of Witch Bolt, will it use that range or the spell's default range to determine the range that the spells ends at?

it seems to be the type of spell I would be using in close-quarters situations or when a buddy grapples someone, at least that's the context I got.
