Wizard spell casting

Hi all,

This may have been covered elsewhere and I apologise if I'm repeating a question . OK so a wizard has a number of known spells at 1st level and from that they prepare four spells to use, At 1st level they have two 1st level spell slots to use.

My question is this, in order to use the same spell twice in one day would they need to prepare it twice (or more as you gain more spell slots)? So for instance, a 1st level Wizard would prepare Magic Missile x2, Shield and Mage Armour or is it that you have four different spells prepared and you can use any of those spells as long as you have the relevant spell slot available to cast them?

The way I read it, it appears to be the former rather than the latter.

Regards,

Thanks for that. I appreciate the quick reply. I'm running Lost Mines of Phandelver at my local shop next Sunday and I know it would have been one of the questions that got asked.
