Worth doing?

I made a Tiefling sorcerer and my original plan was to go 17 sorcerer and 3 warlock and get the ritual caster/wiz feat..

My stats:

STR 8

DEX 15

CON 10

INT 13 +1 (race) = 14

WIS 10

CHA 15 +2 (race) = 17

I am still not sold on what a sorcerer brings to the table that can't be done better by another class especially wizard, but since the character concept callss for a dragon bloodied Tiefling, I need at least one level of sorcerer. I alos looked at the psuedo-dragon stats and saw that they were wimpy compared to previous editions and could be one shot by a level 1 kobold. The MM makes them a little more desirable, but I don;t know if the AL is using the MM yet.

I then had the idea of going 4 sorcerer and 16 bard. This would give me:

Sorcerer

4 sorc pts

5 cantrips

5 spells known

4 1st, 3 2nd slots

1 ASI

2 metamagic

Lore Bard

6 spells from any list

Song of Rest d10

Bardic Inspiration d10

Jack of All Trades

4 expertise skills

4 skills

1 music instrument

Cutting Words

4 ASI

Font of Inspiration

Up to level 8 spells

Which is not bad. However I would be giving up the idea of having a pet psuedo-dragon and would have to use 2 of my magical secrets to get hex and eldritch blast wihtout any of the invocations for it. So I thought, what would happen if I went:

4 sorcerer/ 4 warlock/ 12 bard?

I would gain everything from level 4 warlock including full ASI. However I would lose some bard stuff.

7th + level spells though I would get 1 7th and 8th spell slot to use.

Only d8  for bardic inspiration

Only d8 for song of rest

2 magical secrets (though I would gain them back from level 4 warlock.)

Peerless Skill

Superior inspiration (though I wasn't counting on it anyways.)

I looked through the list of 7th + spells that a bard gets and didn't really see anything really crying "stupid, don't do it" since you only get one slot for them unless you go full bard. Since I plan on getting ritual caster for wizard rituals, I would gain some things extra. I would have some nice scalable attack spells and could use 4 the magical secrets spells to get druid/cleric spells if there wasn't something I need from the wizard list that wasn't a ritual.

So the question is, Stupid idea or can I have my cake and eat it too?

Honestly, I wouldn't dip 4 for Sorcerer when doing Bard. I know you get a feat, but you give up 9th level spells AND Wish (at 18th level Bard).

But that's just me thinking long run. If you're gonna use this character but not get that high, it'll probably work out fine

I would lower int and bump con instead.

Sorcerers do Meta Magic better than anyone else. Double target Haste sound appealling? Twinned Spell. Or do you want to do damage? Quickened Spell. Maybe sneaking is your thing? Subtle Spell. Maybe you just like to sit back and snipe? There's a Meta Magic for that. Reroll damage dice? Extend a duration?

Sorcerers are the most versatile with regards to what they can do to their spells.

EDIT: Note that available Sorcery Points are based on Sorcerer level. Unless you really want some Bard spells or features your original plan will do you best. Just be sure to pick up Edlritch Blast, Hex and Agonising Blast and you're set for combat, leaving the rest completely free for other purposes. Although if you want to ritual cast: Warlock 5, go Book and pick up the Invocation.

How long will the campaign last?  Will you make it to level 18-20?  How long will you play at that level?

IOW, If you will not likely make it past level 15 (or 12, or 8....) don't worry so much about what the character will look like at level 20.

True enough on the Book of Ancient Secrets. In that case I'd say stick with Sorcerer 17/Warlock 3 and picking up Ritual Caster.

If I went with my original plan, when would be the best time to fit in the 3 warlock levels?

Oh good question. I'd start Sorcerer. I wouldn't start on Warlock until a level before Eldritch Blast gets a second attack, and then I'd take two levels to pick up Agonising Blast. After that Eldritch Blast carries your combat capabilities by its lonesome, so you can focus on other things.

So 3 levels Sorcerer and then 3 of warlock. That was kind of what I was thinking about doing.

If I did go with the 4 sorcerer/16 bard or 4 sorc/4 warlock/12 bard route for more utility I could still get good damage, but I would also at least make sure I got some healing ability. It doesn't look like the AL people seem to run clerics at least not from what I have seen.

Any advice to make it better, like when to take what class, what sorcerer metas to get to max the 4 sorcery points I would have and so forth?

I just hit level 2 sorcerer, so I have some time to decide.

Quicken lets you cast Eldritch Blast and a big spell at the same time. Twinned Spell might be good with healing spells.

I have a couple of questions.

How does hex work with magic missle, +1d6 or +3d6?

If I have a familiar and it gives me magic resistance and I get hit by a fireball (40), do I take half damage if I save (20), half damage from it being a spell(10) and half damage from it being fire(5) since they are different effects that reduce damnge?

Thanks for the clarification Timbo. I didn't remember reading that and didn't think to look it up. It probably is stated in the block on resistances. Thanks for confirming the rest of it though! Hex & Eldritch Blast.... mmmmmmm......
