So I'm really liking how a few different options are coming together for this concept. Here's what I've got so far:

Starting out Variant Human Fighter with Performer Background and Tavern Brawler for bonus feat. At 3rd level go battlemaster to get the trip attack and two other maneuvers. Tavern Brawler and Trip Attack combo together like so:

Make unarmed attack, on a hit expend superiority die for extra d8 damage and enemy makes save or prone, then bonus action grapple attempt from tavern brawler. The result if all goes well is a damaged, prone, and grappled enemy that can now not stand up until it escapes the grapple. I picture it as a flying elbow attack comboing into a pin. Fighting style would be either duelist for extra damage or defense for extra AC. I guess the usefulness of duelist will depend on whether or not you are considered to be "wielding" your unarmed strike, although with tavern brawler you can just as easily wield an improvised weapon one handed for the same effect, like a folding chair or something like that.

Performer background gives your performance and acrobatics proficiency, as well as disguise kit so you can make your wrestling costume.

Would eventually want to MC rogue for expertise, possibly 2 levels for cunning action, or even 11 levels for reliable talent to be a nearly unbeatable grappler, although to make that really worthwhile would need to wield a finesse weapon to make use of sneak attack. This wouldn't be too bad as the prone target grants advantage, so after the initial knockdown and grab, the followup attack with the finesse weapon would really hurt. Although that gets a bit out of theme for my idea.

Alternately (or in addition too), could MC Barbarian for the rages to get advantage on athletics checks while raging, and the bear totem benefits, as well as bigger HD and potentially fast movement depending how many levels taken. The only issue with that is that entering a rage is a bonus action, so would not also be able to use the free grab on same turn.

Here's the rough starting ability scores I'm looking at:

STR-15 (9)+1 Tavern Brawler
DEX-14 (7)
CON-14 (7)
INT-8  (0)
WIS-8  (0)
CHA-12 (4)

I'm unsure where to put my other starting points though.

Thoughts/Suggestions?
