Its always fun coming back to this board after being away for a while and reading the many over reacting posts and replies. Does it really matter if its 3e or any of the other many off topic posts? I would like to start a discussion about what is on and off topic. To get the ball rolling i'll start with these few, and their only my opinion.

off topic
----------
Promoting 3e to the detriment of older versions
Telling wizos how to do their job
Whining about your thread getting locked
Telling WotC how to run their business
Threatening to delete the OOP board (like It matters with our inability to post on topic)

on topic
----------
How does infravision work
How would i convert my 3e character to 1e (or vise versa)
two fighters and a mage walk into a bar....
Where can I find OOP materials
Who's your favorite D&D artist

Just to name a few of each, please add on your ideas.

I'd just add discussion of OoP material in general as being on topic as well as house rules which you may have created for OoP editions.

I agree entirely, the wizos do a fine job from what I've seen and most of the malcontents have little grounds to criticize. Anyways, back to talking about OOP, away!

Hey! I'm a malcontent, and I stand on plenty of grounds!

As to what's considered On Topic, how about discussion of which contradictory optional rules do you use? (I'm thinking Complete Fighter's Handbook versus Combat & Tactics kinda thing.)

Plus I don't think 3E stuff is ever On Topic. But I am biased, having been forced to play 3E rules for a couple of years before my group (of younger players) came to see THE LIGHT! Heck, I had to DM it through two campaigns, both of which ended abruptly when I couldn't take anymore of the dang *mmph mmfm fmfmbmlmm!*

...okay I've stopped complaining....

Until such time as a conversion board can be put up (if ever) I say we leave the "3e conversion" stuff as one topic. Especially if they want to know how to convert 3e material to 1e...but I still say the other way around is ok with me. ;)

Otherwise, on topic is anything before 3e as far as I'm concerned.

i believe that is a good start. i would add How would i convert my 3e character to 1e (or vice versa)

there are other In Print boards for this. if you are just coming here to do it b/c you feel it has an older crowd i would say the older guys willing to play 3ed hang out on the In Pring forums too... WizO Cat and WizO Doxxie and trollbill and Zherog and...

if you are coming here to do it b/c you honestly feel the only place to discuss 1ed is here... then leave out the 3ed part. but that is just my opinion.

How would i convert my 3e character to 1e (or vise versa)

You know I see plenty of posts on this Board that ask about converting the classics (Against the Giants, Tomb of Horrors, etc. etc.) to 3e, but I have yet to see a thread like "Hey, since we are not getting any new stuff, how do I go about converting Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil back into 1e/2e?"

You would think that Wizards would like to see threads like that as it actually might mean some sales dollars from the grognards.

I'm using a few 3e products in my games actually. Mostly the older 3.0 ones as the newer ones aren't the same quality and aren't as usable in older editions (more feats, prestige classes, skills, and less content).

But at least some of the 3e books are worth a little backwards conversion.

i posted all of my Conversion threads on the In Print forums about 3 and half years ago.

I'm curious as to what reaction you got posting conversion requests to in print boards. I would assume that most people reading in print boards would be lacking in 1e knowledge. Certainly you would need to understand both editions (well) to make an accurate conversion. From the posts I've seen in here does anyone with knowledge of 1e (or other older versions) hang out in the in print boards? Or is it just me who has never been to any board here on wizards but this one?

I used to hang out on the 3E boards, but gradually I had less and less usefulness to contribute (as I managed to creep further and further away from the 3E game). Now I just come here, where my opinions still matter.

Uh...I think they do, anyway. ;)

I'm a regular at the Mystara board. At least for non-AD&D conversions that board should be excellent for finding people who can help you with conversions since Mystara had its glory days before it was converted to 2e. Then again, the Mystara board isn't really an in print board is it? :P

I, like several of you, tried to post to the main-boards, but grew tired of the inevitable chorus of "That's not the way we do it!" everytime I'd mention an old rule or convention.

I cannot understand how a group of players who advocate 3rd ed for its 'flexibility' among other things, can be so inflexible when one of us old-timers dares to speak.

Let them have the main boards, I'll stay here and on other forums

http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/

where people are more interested in what I have to say.

Difference being, we're welcome at DF, but only tolerated here in WotC-land. (Paging Halaster...come in Halaster)

Ok, though the original and subsequent posters put some excellent points for the direction of this board, this thread has really drifted off topic.
