On Leadership and Similar Abilities.
by Shea C. Reinke

Show

The leadership feat is one of the most unique feats in the world of Dungeons and Dragons d20. There are a few corollaries to leadership in the complete supplements as well as amongst the so called "third party" accessories. This article relates only to that which is available OGC. The reason is all my SR&D work presented here on the Regdar's Repository is hereby declared Open Game Content, not Product Identity, and available to be utilized for free. Just, ya know, remember paragraph 15 as that's Shea C. Reinke. Also am sorta known as the Wonder World Design Studio's lead designer. There will be a Wonder World web site before I have my bachelor's degree (with recompilations of things and an SR&D download) but for now on to: The Leadership Feat!

That's pretty interesting. I like the idea of the servants and such. But asides from the XP differences how is that different than taking leadership and just having it be a level 1 follower to do your bidding? Rather than wasting all those feats with the usual bard or sorcerer, or other class that would take leadership doesn't often have to spare.

You can't take leadership at first level. You don't get a first level follower until 10th. Sure carrier looks less nifty at 12th level (when your other option is actual leadership). Really, these feats are like toughness or die hard. You take them because you want to extend an already available function. And some (particularly the carrier) allows a leadership function to appear a full six levels earlier than ever before.

I had an idea reading Arcane Warder I had the idea for a 1-20 base class that integrates the leadership concept. There is a prestige class or two, but this would be more like the born leader idea. Would that have fit in here, do you think? Or would that have been going over board?

In the Dragonlance setting book there is a 'noble' prestige class that has nifty mass leadership abilities. Teamed up with a bard and the leadership feat a noble is one freaky hoard-meister.

The "link" abilities that familiars, special mounts, and animal companions receive cannot be more clear in clarification of the mechanical relationship between the player and their designated assistants. A wizard's familiar character can eventually learn to speak with the master. (What benefit are you supposed to gain from being able to talk to your own PC? Ipso the familiar is not your PC.) As an intelligent NPC, a familiar is free to act in its master's best interests in any way the DM considers fitting.

The familiar link is world dependent, i.e. up to the DM. It can just be some creature you've charmed that mutates due to it's exposure to your magic. It could be a creature you've created that appears normal but slowly grows, kinda like the material plane shadow of your magical power. It could be an extraplanar symbiotic entity that you gave shape with magic, its mind linked to your mind, where both consciousnesses blend over time until the familiar seems like an arm or leg or any other limb. Or, as Raistlin put it, just a summoned creature the council sent to spy on you. Any of these scenarios adjust whether a familiar is a PC or NPC.
I know it's a diversion from the topic of leadership, but world distinctions are important, and should always trump rules, in my opinion. Not to mention my obsession with wizards.

A strange form of metagame could go this way: Your character has the leadership feat, but no dedicated cohort or followers. The idea is that they are on the spot inspiring. Any given NPC that meets the listed requirements determined by level and alignment could be convinced to follow you, even if for only a short time.

This is the way I always thought it should be played. If you're a fighter in an army you get your adjutant and some privates that do what you say. If your a wizard you are required to apprentice someone and you get a crew of librarians at your beck and call. If your in the church, then whatever church you stop at will have a local priest and some volunteer laborers who will help you out. Bards would change from a nuisance to a menace!

Or you could just go watch "Seven Samurai." Not only is it an awesome movie, it demonstrates leadership excellently.
