I'm sure many DM's, both of experience and newer ones wetting their feet, have wanted to, if not already, create their own world. I mean, sure, there is a certain nostalgia about using one of the premade worlds. Not worrying about rules as much, or not wondering exactly how powerful a PC can be, but it is someone else's madness that you're using. So, the idea comes into mind, to create ones own world. Personally, I myself have had the idea for several months now, my first DMing experiance only 4 months ago, about creating my own world. I have a vivid imagination and alot of spare time on my hands, so why not have my own world causing distress and happiness for my PC's. So, I have set upon myself a task for creating my own world. Sure, I know there are two ways to go about it. The first being, start in a large aspect and work my way down, as in creating the world first then work on the kingdoms and smaller towns afterwards. The second being start small and work your way up, and this being start with a small town or kingdom and then create your world. Both have their flaws and their good points, both can create exciting worlds. Through my eclectic actions, I have gone from both the first and second options. So, the rough draft of the idea is quite, well eclectic is a good word to describe it. I have first planned so many things. You have the opportunity of from the big details of just the realm, instead of Greyhawk or Forgotten Realms, or you have the opportunity to bring it down to details as in creating new races, and altering already existing races. Both ideas can give you your own feeling to the game. The smallest details can even go by altering the feats and skills. Giving a new skill(s), or giving a new feat(s) can add some excitement. This also works by creating or altering the weapons and armor too. A friend of mine, who has spent the good part of 8 years working on his own world. He has created a new race, and made alterations to his own world. It is an amazing world. He has essentially created a 50 page players guide, about 100 new monsters (whether or not he found these from others is his own choice in that), his own Deities and Demigod Notebook, and several new (or modified) weapons, armor, goods and services, skills, and feats. It is amazing that he has spent so much time on his own world, it is inspiring. I'm sure, everyone who reads this message board, can relate, or has read this topic in various threads they're sick of it. I simply wrote this as a benefit to the geniuses who have taken the time to create worlds that we can use in our daily D&D experiences, and the benefit that we can one day create our own world, to cause the madness and joyfulness in our PC's and our own minds. You can get to it here: http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=295, or by scrolling down towards the bottom on the main D&D board. -- 77IM |
