Q: What are Avatars?
A: Avatars are the images just below your screenname.
Q: How can I change or get my Avatar?
A: You can change your Avatar by clicking on Edit Avatar in your User Control Panel.
Q: What is a Custom Avatar?
A: A Custom Avatar is an image you chose to be your Avatar, such as this:
Q: How do I get a Custom Avatar?
A: Custom Avatars are given out as prizes at UnCon (coming up later
this year), or as rewards to those members who work especially hard for the community. You will not be
given a Custom Avatar if you ask for it, nor if you badger the WizOs.
Q: What are Titles?
A: Titles are the text beneth your screenname, the default Title being Member.
Q: Why do some people have different Titles?
A: Some people do specific tasks around the community, and are given 'official' titles to reflect that, such as
Scribe or Game Master. Other people are given titles by the WizOs, at the WizOs discretion.
Q: How can I get a Custom Title?
A: WizOs will randomly give you a Custom Title if they feel like it. It may be anything they feel like giving you.
You will not be given a Custom Title if you ask for it, nor if you badger the WizOs.
Q: What if I don't like my CUstom Title?

Q: What 'official' Custom Titles are out there, and what do they mean?
A:
- Scribe - People who work in the RPG area of the community, doing various tasks.
- Game Master - People who run the various gaming forums.
- UnCon Prizewinner - The winner of a contest at UnCon.
- Marketplace Council Member - People who are running the Terisian Arena.
Feel free to point out any corrections or Custom Titles I have missed.

I think part of the problemis that to avoid a large number of potential issues, folks would have to submit their Avatar to WOTC to be checked.
Checked for size, appropriateness and copyright.
That last one, especially, has the potential to be very time consuming.
But lets be very generous, and say it takes a mere 10 minutes to do all the checking required, and assign the Avatar to an individual.
There are currently 100,204 members.
Lets say only 10% of them apply for custom avatars.
Thats 10,000+ avatars, at 10 minutes an avatar.
That's over 166 hours. Assuming a 7 hour working day and a 5 day working week, that's 47 weeks.
So checking these avatars would, at least for the first year, pretty much be a full time job.
And thats with some *very* conservative estimates, and ignores the fact that there will be new members joining throughout that year, as well as people wanting to change their avatar into something new.

Not to mention the storage space that those 10,000 avatars take up on WOTCs server.
And the issues that arise when two or more people want the same avatar.

Now, if everybody could be trusted not to abuse the ability of linking to offsite avatars, this wouldn't be a problem. But there are folks here who simply cannot be trusted, and that's a fact.
