How many of us miss the clasic adventures of yore. The thrill of the first time we ran across our first orc. Wasn't it just as great as our first battle with a dragon. To me the memories are more than what happened in the game, it was with the people who I played the game with. Friends that I still see to this day, and friends that I probably will never see again. We shared a bond that nothing could ever take away. My fondest memory being that of a simple fox hunt the group got invited on by the king. There was no combat involved that session, Just the seven of us having fun, acting out the parts of our characters and enjoying the laid back way our DM was that night.
I know the day will come when I have to hang up the dice bag and put the books down. But I look foreward to that day, for in the years of my experience with RPG's alot of memories and friendships have made. Hopefully I will see some of you at a Con sometime. Please share some of your memories with all of us here at the boards.
I think thats pretty much the way it should be too.
My most enjoyable memories are of playing a swedish RPG derivative of Runequest. Two of my friends both wanted to game with the rest of us, but they hated each other. However, they figured out they had to get along, in order to game. Later, they became the best of friends.
My second favourite published adventure happened much later in my role-playing "career." We started out as 18-20th level characters just to run through the Labyrinthe of Madness. That's one heckuva dungeon crawl. I played a halfling thief who somehow ended up being the leader of the group (that often happens to my characters, for some reason). Part of my starting equipment was a hornblade? - the shortsword/dagger from 2nd Ed that in the hands of a halfling would cut through stone and wood like butter. Early in the adventure we ran into a devious trap involving a Reverse Gravity button. I used my magic dagger to cut the button out of the wall and we ran around with this stone block wreaking various sorts of chaotic havok and changing the nature of many of the trapped areas. Good times. At the end I set off with the Battlerager and his brother with plans to create an airship utilizing the button.

Really, you can only have the thrill of your first game once. Yes, I do miss the old days, and the people I used to game with. I have only kept in touch with one of them, and he never talks to me any more since I married his aunt. (Long story).
And I can predict that 1st Edition AD&D will be re-released about the time it becomes very cold in certain very warm places. Sad, perhaps, but true. Nostalgia is wonderful, but it doesn't sell the amount of new books Hasbro demands.
BTW if Hasbro reissued the old box sets '74 to say '86 along w/ the core books, some key mods/accessories and it caught on.....everyone here would be disgusted and saddened....the warm feelings of nostalgia would be cheapened by a giant company attempting to cash in on the glory days of a game that is very private to many before it became the bastardized version it is today......again, keep it real.....I believe I have spoken
Bullcrap. I don't play AD&D for "nostalgia purposes". I play AD&D because it's the best thing going. If HasbrWotC re-released the core sets and it garnered many, many new fans I'd jump for joy. As would most if not all of my fellow old-school gamers.
OTOH, if a smaller, 3rd party company was to acquire a license or something, and showed a respect and love for the old school games, I'd hope for the best.
Not everyone enjoys Hackmaster or C&C, but to me, regardless of preference for those systems, it is obvious that those guys do indeed play those games, and enjoy them immensely.
Pipe dreams of course, but pleasant ones...

Hasbro 1st Ed.? Disturbing........Picking up a DMG Effritti cover w/ a Hasbro logo? Can't Picture it......btw how does one who played 1st ed. in 79-81 not feel nostalgic?
Yes, but I remember an interview where the original creators took the game to Parker Brothers or Mattel, imagine if they bit into what they had. With the buyouts that happened later onit seems Hasbro would have owned D&D a bit earlier.
