Hopefully the success of the Lord of the Rings trilogy will prompt new interest in fantasy movies.

I would love to see the legacy of Drizzt turned into a movie.

Only if they kept the idiots that did the D&D movie away from it. I bet Peter Jackson could do it right.

It is a shame that the D&D movie turned out the way it did. I had high expectations for it.

A new D&D movie would require a skilled producer and director that would treat it with the respect it deserves.

I think with the success $$$ of LotR, producers are going making a lot more fantasy movies.
The 1&2e players of the 70s and 80's are now the generation with the cash, and some of us enjoy reliving the fun parts of are past.

Maybe the "Time of Troubles" condensed into the "juicy parts" much like how the Lord of the Rings showed the best parts of the 13 months of the adventures of Frodo and the gang.

If anything the only real problem with the D&D Movie, which is an offical WOtSC product as the logo is on my DVD, was that it was to much soap opera style "drama" and dialog and not enough "braveheart", "Two Towers","Return of the King" style action and fighting.

Lord of the Rings would have failed if it had been edited to be a more "talking" than action movie like how D&D movie was....period.

Just look at the "best parts" of the Star Wars Series and Lord of the Rings, and people will say it's the Battles, not the characters talking about their feelings ( Darth Maul Battle, Yoda Battle, Destroy Death Star battle, destroy new Death star battle, Two towers battle, Main battle in Return of the King....both waves, End of Return of king Battle with the last moments of Ring around drama, and of course the Battle between the rebels and Empire on the Icy world.

Oh and while the girl casting around 4 spells was cute, I would have liked her to at least keep that bag of "universal reagent" so she could be a little more useful next time (she was at least 8th level but still just little more than rabble in a world ruled by 20th level mages )

And before anyone busts D&D chops any more the Conan movies with Ah-nald weren't exactly "Blockbusters" either and Fantasy/Sci-Fi movies usually get slammed in mainstream with the criticts and shunned by the award shows which is why "Lord of the Rings" winning award after award when pitted against "real movies" like "Cold Mountain" is considered "surpising".

What!?! The Conan Movie was amazing - for the very reasons you talk about : the great action sequences, the drama, and the real feeling of a shamanistic supernatural power.

I'd love to see the dragonlance tale of...
(The dragons of autumn, summer winter series)

I ALWAYS prefered them to LoTR. (I dislike the book, soooooooooo dull)

The films were very good, but I think with a better storyline, it may have helped.

Tanis and Raistlin and Cammeron and Tasslehoff, THATS what ya want, dragons, adventure....

I love the Conan movies and can't wait for the last one (apparently Arnie will be doing one more? Prob due to LoTR? To finish the trilogy)

D&D I feel was done as a roleplaying game, rather than a film. They tried comedy (I remember being the ONLY one in the cinema laughing at the halfling attacking his ankles joke, and sadly, that was it.) and thre was too much colour! Also it was teh underdog trying to get through.

Hell in most D&D games the heroes NEVER die (depending on ya GM) I prefer the main characters, (like in LoTR), Staying alive throughout (in LoTR Beorn dies, as does the dwarf in Dragonlance...)

I also like LARGE groups of people, so LoTR worked well there, in other films it's always about 1 or 2 people!!! D&d is about groups!!! dammit!!!

"To Hell with you too!" (in c***y Arnie accent)

You're kidding, right? Yes, they were good, too, but in a SIMPLE way. A-Z. Nowhere near the depth of Tolkien. Pure pulp, but still decent. WHO? Try again. You might be thinking of BOROMIR.

Yeah that would work. Any movie producer who were to read them could easilly see that they contain qualities that many blockbusters do. Its got plenty of action. The characters are oozing with inner conflict. You have the Luarana, Tanis, Kitiara love triangle. You have good comic elements, Tasslehoff and Fizban. The Cronicles would definatly translate.

WHERE WAS THE MAD FOREST BLOKE!!! THATS WHAT I WANNA KNOW. (Tom bombadil? Bet I get that name wrong too! lol!!!)

But I do truely think they'd make a GREAT film!!!!

Tolkien, well he just seemed to ramble on. (bloody fields, and grass, and wind, and fields and....)

I wonder what sort of a roleplayer he would have made?

here's an idea
for a D&D movie

get some actual D&D players to make a plot and use one of the D&D settings. They could have a contest.

Yeah and just cause the game is called Dungeons and Dragons doesn't mean it needs to have dragons.

They could get a team of players and a DM to play a game and then make the movie based on what they do.

I loved both Connan Movies, but would it have been a better D&D Movie? (I think yes)

Just as

Would "Krull" have been a better D&D Movie? (I think yes)

Would "The 13th Warrior" been a better D&D Movie?

Would "DragonSlayer" have been a Better D&D Movie? (I think yes)

Would "BraveHeart" have been a better D&D Movie? (No, but gotta love the action)

Would Lord of the Rings have been a better D&D Movie? (Definitely, as it was the LOtR books that inspired the creators of D&D to create D&D)

The 13th Warrior IMHO was a completely over-looked movie! Next to Conan the Barbarian and Gladiator it ranks among my most favored films. A forced viewing(by my better half)of A Knights Tale created an instant fan of the film. Initially I wouldnt give it a chance due to previews that revealed a Tournament croud dancing & singing to Queens: We will rock you. As for the D&D film. It did nothing positive for the name Dungeons and Dragons, roleplaying or the fantasy genre.

Well if someone like Peter Jackson is in charge of teleplay and direction would you give it a chance?

One of the mistakes made was a "Green" Director and someone that did play D&D put together his story for his campaign world and, lets face it, some people suck at DMing

Don't tell be you have never been bored out of you mind at a session if you hop groups or even if there are those that are better at DMing than others within the group.

The real question would have been if this person had ever created a Adventure instead of just playing in one? ;)

I get the odd feeling that Whitley is the PC of the person that never got to be the Hero in the campaign world and of his group so he rewrote a "favor my PC" adventure when he got the chance though he may have never DMed or been allowed to DM before.

Don't tell me that when ever left to play with yourself that you'd actually let you PC lose?

More importantly, some people suck at story telling or at least at pulling out the "juicy parts"

Peter Jackson and the People involved edited down a 13 month Adventure into 3 grand movies centered around the "juicy parts" of the Adventure and still kept the story together.

Perhaps the D&D movie may have been better if

1) They showed Whitley's dad working on those coaches on his own and the authorities dragging him away in front of the PC's eyes when he was young leading to his life of crime

2) The conspiracy that led to the Emperor and Emperess assassination that led to the girl Emperess leading the kingdom (She is young and they hoped "controllable") until her "all are equal" and emphasizing the fact she had no qualms on using the scepter to fend off assassination attempts and to "iron fist" her rule....and perhaps actually doing so once or twice to show she means business (She is a Mage herself, after all)

3) Then the Dragon experiment in the main bad guys attempt to control a Dragon and the extra emphasis on the Dragon actually breaking the device because it was flawed and at least yelling "I am going to eat you," despite Dragons rarely talking to what they consider inferior species unless they absolutely have to. Then is Idea to try to convince the ruling mages to get the Empress to give up her Scepter for practicing magic with the scepter without permission by framing her for the "accident" (Like in Amn unauthorized use of magic is restricted) and the political stand off

4) GO straight to the Thieves breaking into the Mage University, and as they rummage through the stuff a "run down the hall" shows that they aren't too far away from the Professor and his apprentice Researching the alternative way the Empress can give up her scepter (again skip unnecessary dialog and pointless scenes)

5) The thieves make noise the girl catches them. They here the commotion they have to escape blah blah blah

6) Cut straight to Thieves guild and do the "get the ruby" thing and fight their way out and get caught by the Elf Ranger and her men (Ct out unnecessary dialog and walk/ride scenes)

7) All of them go to rescue the girl and it would be nice to see the Beholder actually fight and off some of the "red shirts" of the group, the thieves get in, rescue the girl, get the scroll, It is still okay if Snails dies but let it be among others dueling in the background. Just don't forget the body and put a Cleric in there at least saying Snails cant be raised from the dead cause it "was his time" (Again skip the unnecessary dialog)

8) Only the holder of the Dragon's Eye can enter the Lich's Lair, at least say that instead of the lame "This is your task B.S." the rest of the sequence is find.

9) Why was a Ranger caught off guard? Why does a Wizard not carry her reagents, and Why would a Dwarf that wants to/likes to fight surrender? No at least show them putting up a fight before being over whelmed and taken prisoner.....It would have put at least 1 more battle scene in the movie. (Understandable if the Ranger's men where all killed by the Beholder, but where are they now? Story inconsistency?) Come on the Girl is at least 8th level lets see her carry her reagents and rip at least 1 fireball or Charm person.

10) Whitely come out after getting the gem and the main group is captured and blooded/bruised up (all Ranger's "red shirt" men dead) and the second fight breaks out after "the betrayal" and Whitley cases the punk- through the "gate" while the others battle with the girl actually casting spells.

11) The "Civil War" was...well Lame. Lets see the factions for the Empress and against the Empress use their solders in ground mele, wonderful spell weapons, "lessor" mages spells flying back and forth while the "Masters" engage the Empress and her Dragons with more than just "Flaming Shperes" and even foot Melita will engage the Dragons (though they can't expect to not die in droves as the Dragons stomp and chomp)

12) The Battle is winding down and the Empresses forces are winning and all the Master Mages are dead (same as original) and the punk- brings the scepter that brings Red Dragons to the fight and in is pretty much the Empresses ground troops and "lessor mages" turn to get stomped and chomped unless a gold dragon intervenes and human blood and dragon blood starts spilling in droves

13) The combat between Whitley and the punk- is find as the ending sequence where after Whitely got the scepter and broke it, and the Empress made the Dragon eat the Main bad guy but the pull back should be of smoldering buildings and bodies of mages, solders and Dragons lying everywhere with people helping the injures and grieving the dead (War is Hell reality)

14) The End.

15) Or if you must have a "Up beat ending" we can see the Empress declaring that all people whether Mage or not are "equal" and breaking her scepter to prove that she isn't trying to force that decree down their throat...not that it maters as she is pretty much the only mage left standing (both in original movie and my better scructured version...aside from the girl and a few other apprentices/"lessor" mages )

16) The End.

P.s. Still think her gesture was pointless as she killed almost all the Mages and after seeing her ruthless handling of the situation they might think twice about rising up against her with or without her scepter

I think they should do a film version of a classic module, say.....White Plume Mountain? They have a decent story line and most 1e 2e stuff was short enough to make into a film. You would also have a fan base built in. How many of us would go to see it just because we played in that module/world. I know I would.

They also need to make the movie more graphic and realistic looking, not cartoony like the D&D movie was. My ultimate wish would be for the script writers/director to actually PLAY the module they're making and use their play to film the movie.
ex. Peter Jackson's playing a fighter, he get's crushed by the Giant Crab in the boiling lake.......that's the way you film it. If the whole party dies, well that's what sequels are for. I would love to see a movie that has the hero's lose at the end.

Actually, Peter Jackson did double as a extra on the film in the battle scenes.

If you look real good he was in several fight on both sides (traitor )

And he is a devout Tolkien fan so that is why his "vision" was so grand and probably why he wanted to be among the "reenactment"

Considering Jackson did LotR -and- Meet the Feebles, I wouldn't put it past his skill, nor his sense of taste, to do a decent D&D movie. After all, he managed to make an NC-17 muppet film that was both utterly obscene, and terribly terribly amusing.

He also seems to be a Fantasy Movie buff and was noting the weak points in Willow, Legend, Labyrinth, and of course the D&D movie.

He also saw the Animated LOtR from that guy that also made Wizards.

His very intention was to do LOtR justice and to give Fantasy movies the respect they deserve.

So "Luck" had nothing to do with the success of the Movies.

im sorta a young blood and i never heard of the dnd movie before this thread. i think the drizzt movies would be sweet if done like LOTR but honestly, where the hell they gonna get sum1 good enough to look like/ act like drizzt, it would be nearly impossible (then again, legolas wasnt that badly done, but hes a couple caliburs down from drizzt). I think there was another thread talking about this, they wanted sean connory to be elminster and nvr realy got past arguing about that. anyways as fun as it would be to see a dnd movie, if it turns out as bad as u all say the last one was, it might turn off a lot of potential dnd player

Oh yah, no matter what kind of dnd moive they make, if they have pikel (the dwarf druid, brother of ivan, both live in the spirit soaring with the high priest cadderly) and have at least 2 scenes where they depict his druidly magic and depict it well, id buy the movie. oh yah and to see a green bearded dwarf...

I think they should re-release Tom Hanks' masterpiece,

.
Mazes and Monsters.

Now THAT was a great movie. Especially the end where he was running around a psychiatric hospital "slaying monsters that only he could see"!!! Brilliant!!!

(ETA: plot summary and photos at http://www.spookylibrarians.com/mazes.html)

But I do agree that the success of the LOTR movies will result in more big budget fantasy based movies coming out.

Not sure about Drizzt in a movie though. I don't think it could possibly be as good as the books. For me, the battle descriptions, more than the plot itself, make these books work so well. (Plus more magic that needs to be shown visually = more potential to ruin an otherwise great movie with some absolute cheeze effects --or make it even better with great effects (?)--)

Well before Peter's Jackson's version of LOtR a lot of Fanatsy films were always "cartoony" at it's best

Believe it or not Peter Jackson saw D&D and was like

I just saw a Live version Movie of "Spawn" on T.V. and the whole thing looked stupid and "cartoony",and the Cartoon version for HBO actually seemed more "real" if that makes sense.

Without proper "vision" and "direction" any Fantasy film, even if directly from a FR Novel, will end up "cartoony", cheezy, and stupid looking....or even worse...boring if they tell to much story without enough action.

Peter Jackson giving a History of Middle earth for people that never read the books (like me) was a excellent style and idea to help the audience, even if they lacked a Middle Earth Atlas, at least get caught up enough were they aren't like about whats going on, enough sappy drama for the girls, enough action for the guys, so everyone but the nerdy people pointing out the minor differences between the book and Movie could enjoy the Movie.

So it wasn't the Elf princess that met them and she wasn't the one that ran Frodo to the River and summoned the Wave to wash the Wraiths away in the original book, nor did she speak so much in the pre-women's lib ultimate complaint woman/servant time that the book was written in. I do honestly think that if he could the Author would have re-written the story.(Director's Cut? ) I really don't know what the Tolkien Fans are complaining about

I think we can expect to see big flashy productions in the future, but not necessarily any more fantasy epics. Far fewer people have read the Dragonlance novels than LotR, and I can't see someone making a better fantasy film than LotR.

Narnia is in the works, I see maybe a King Arthur story as being viable but beyond that the pickings are slim - unless someone has a good Discworld script....

I think there can be no movie about the forgotten realms' drow, because their being so utterly evil and their being black, although WE know it's only german mythology and WE know that a black man is still a man and a black elf isn't, well it's totally politically incorrect and the studios won't take the risk to be charged with racism.

Again, and I think it's good to say it one more time, if there hadn't been freaking racists in the first place, we wouldn't have to wonder about this NOW. So get the heck away from our planet !
