May 06, 2007 13:11:38 When a deamon or devil dies on the material plane, can it be summoned again the next round or does it take some time for it to “pull itself together” before it can be summoned to the material plane again.

My group has always assumed the latter, but when we actually needed to know, we could not find any rules about it.

So does anybody know anything about it ? (any edition of AD&D/DnD rules will help)

May 06, 2007 15:19:27 Under 1st edition rules, demons of Type IV and under are apparently slain when their material form is slain, while Type V and VI demons are forced back to their plane of origin and can not come forth again for 100 years or "until another aids it to go forth again" (MM Pg. 16), whatever that means exactly. On the subject of devils the MM is vague as to what happens to lesser devils when they are killed on the material plane (I presume they are killed like less than Type V demons), but if a greater devil is destroyed it goes back to its home plane for 90 years as a lemure before it resumes its former status, and if an arch devil is destroyed it is "bound to its own partucular plane of Hell for a Decade" (MM pg. 20)

Edit: There seems to be some conflict with the Dieties and Demigods book in regards to what happens to arch devils and the like. D&D book states demon princes and lords and greater devils and arch devils only require 2-8 weeks before their ability to plane travel is restored, although it agrees that Type V and VI demons must rest a century before doing so.

In second edition, demons needed time to reform themselves, while devils where reduced to nupperibo status and had to be be found and repromoted to their pervious station.

Either of these could take decades, centuries, or longer.
