Usually, in AD&D 2e it would be monster HD and best THAC0/ST choice between class and monster progression. Requiem rules (from the Ravenloft setting) may be different, though.
#3 zombiegleemax Apr 21, 2006 12:09:51	To my best knowledge the answer would be that there is no answer. Prior to 3E monsters don't use character rules and therefore there are no hard rules for improving monsters by adding classes or templates (which of course are a 3E concept). So whenever you create a non-regular monster or NPC you basically assign whichever stats you seem appropriate and be done with it. IIRC the most common solution for such a situation as yours would be to just declare this creature as an ordinary vampire with the additional ability to cast spells as an xth-level magic-user.
