I'd also like to allow them to learn new spells similar to wizards. I was thinking about taking the spells known from the Archivist and using that for both clerics and druids. Clerics would have prayerbooks just like the Archivist and would get new spells in the same way (except being limited to the Cleric list only), but I don't know how to handle that for Druids, as a book seems completely out of place for them. Maybe body tattoo runes? Or I could just revise Druids to be spontaneous casters... Thoughts? |

If you are trying to give them a small, defined list of spells (like the sorc or wizard), then your idea would probably work. If the problem is with splat books and such increasing the divine spell list exponentially, then I would suggest something different: namely that Core spells are on their "list", but any outside source spell has to be researched, found, prayed for, or whatever. Once "discovered" it would be on their list- but they would have to do it on a spell-by-spell basis. For the Druid spellbook thing: remember that Sorcs don't have spellbooks either, and that you are dealing with prayer here not actual spell formulae. Even with a limited spell pool sceneario it's entirely possible to just have them pray for their spells. Overall though: It isn't the vast spell selection that makes clerics or druids super powerful.. Like the Wizard,, it's really just a small handful of spells at some levels that tend to raise them to "holy cow" mode. Limiting the spells they can know will not substantially alter that, unless you snip those (or some of those) spells from their lists entirely. -S |

If I were to do it, I would probably give them double the archivists spells known, because there are a good ammount of cleric spells they are generally expected to know. Otherwise it shouldn't be a big deal. |

Spontaneous divine magic will also work fine though. If you want clerics to be able to gain new spells, I suggest limiting them to the wizard's 2 spells per level. TS |

I'd also like to allow them to learn new spells similar to wizards. My approach is to limit divine casters to the PHB and five spells for each spell level they can cast from other sources. They can change that list each level for flexibility. My goal is to provide limited resources in order to encourage creativity, but to allow use of the splat books. It also provides me an opportunity to review the list without having to know every freakin' spell out there. David |
