I figure this is an appropriate place for this thread, considering Dragon is now out-of-print... I haven't heard anything (but that doesn't mean it hasn't been talked about), but are there plans for archiving issues #251-359 like they did with #1-250? For that matter, what about Dungeon?

I've heard nothing about this at all. It is almost as though Dungeon and Dragon have just dropped off the face of the planet after their cancellation. Given that the material doesn't support 4e, I'd be very surprised if there were any plans for such a product. (But then I'm not employed by WotC, so this is wild speculation).

If they produced such a CD, I'd be in line to buy it.
Any idea where I could pick up the first one?

I have a fairly comprehensive Dungeon index from issue 82-150 in Excel format. I don't remember where I got it from, and it doesn't come up on Google anymore that I can find.

I would love to see a complete Dungeon Magazine Archive. But, I just don't see it happening. I honestly don't see the Powers That Be spending money on previous editions that they won't be supporting.

I would dearly, dearly love a Dungeon Magazine archive, but one other obstacle to overcome here is the whole Paizo issue of divided ownership over time.

I freely admit Dragon's glory days came before 250, but I'd by a CD/DVD of the later issues, too. The first few issues after 250 have some D&D stuff, which is always nice to have on disk so I don't beat up by actual copies too much.

Sadly, as much as I don't expect anything Dungeons and Dragons to be put back into print, I expect such an archive even less. I'm forced to say that the best-case scenario is to hope Wizbro has misjudged 4e enough for them to go bankrupt and sell the rights to somebody who actually wants to publish Dungeons and Dragons again.

If they won't produce an archive of the final 109 issues because it's a different format/edition than what they're doing now, I would think that to be most odd since the first 250 issues were in a format/edition that was on it's way out... even if they don't support it, they'll still make a killing off such an archive because, judging by the (limited) response here, people will buy them. I only have a handful of those 109 issues, but it might be possible to collect them on ebay should the archive never materialize...

Any idea where I could pick up the first one?

I was just checking amazon last night, and they have some... check ebay too...

I also started a thread a few weeks ago on this topic.
It's in the D & D Fundamentals -> Future Releases area.
Quick Link

The overwhelming opinion of the responders was that the project wouldn't fly due to copyright issues. I'm not sure I agree with this opinion, since the New Yorker and Rolling Stone both recently released complete backlogs on CD-ROM, and I can't imagine that they procured the rights to every single ad, image, or article.

Is there a WoTC staff member around that could weigh in on this?

I really doubt the copyright problems are insurmountable, and they'll make a killing off it since producing a CD-ROM archive is far cheaper than reprinting everything on paper (especially since the first 250 issues of Dragon are already taken care of)...

I don't really see why copyright issues would factor in if they were just reproducing the article content. When you make a submission to either magazine, you sign to allow WotC to use your work in any manner they see fit, so they own the article.
Also, they still owned the magazine, even though Paizo produced it, so I'm proabably missing something when I say that I can't see any copyright issues.

The primary factor I see is that they would be producing a product that was not 4e compatible (well, it is with a little imagination, just as 3e material could be adapted to the 2nd ed settings).

My two zhents worth.

Paid advertisements in a magazine are, in effect, the property of the magazine that publishes them, in that issue. If they reproduce the issue they have the right to do so, and it is, in effect, free advertising for those who paid for the ads.

As for a Dungeon Magazine archive, it might be a matter of who exactly owns the copyright for the older issues. Does anyone here know with 100% certainty who owns the copyright of the various issues?

I've got a pdf of Dragon #360 on my desktop, dowloaded off of WotC's webspace. Just go HERE and login with your Gleemax account. 'Tis free. As well as Articles for issue #s 361 and 362. I don't like that they aren't releasing the articles in a single download in a timely manner. They are also focusing mostly on 4e teasers at this point, which isn't as good for me, either.

Just saying that if you haven't heard anything than you haven't been listening. ;)

Regardless of its content, the delivery method they're using now for Dragon magazine is horrible. It wouldn't be so bad if they compiled the whole thing into some semblence of its former glorious self, as in one PDF for download, but they scatter all the issue's articles across multiple links. A very poor imitation of the original Dragon periodicals. All the ranting and raving was justified imo. It'd be one thing to want to print out a complete PDF hard copy to continue the print run of Dragons for yourself, but it's something else to have to compile everything yourself over multiple links.

If you look, #360 WAS compiled into one download. As a singe document, no less. I have no complaint there. I just wish they were more timely with compiling the new ones.

I have a question. since the archives are in pdf has anyone bought a copy of 251 or later and put it into the folder with 250 and earlier does it get recognized by the archives program during searches?

Where? I've looked all over under the Dragon subsection and all I see are individual links to articles.

I don't know if this will help, but I found a site you can try.
