I had been asked to do something RPG-related at my local gaming store and was deliberating over a wide choice of options. After the news yesterday and reading the Order of the Stick comic I thought I'd break out my old school books and play down at the FLGS and hopefully entice a few newer players in trying the edition I know and love.

The idea is to get together this weekend, but I'd like to try something for a fortnights time. Anyone else want to join by playing at the same time? I'm aiming for Saturday the 22nd March, two weeks hence.

Maybe we could agree on one module that we all run - sort of like D&D Games Day, and yet old-school.

Let me know if the idea has any merit.

Mar 06, 2008 16:09:02 I'm in Australia, so I'm sure I'm in the minority on these boards. I thought that others could have a game in their respective towns at the same time and then we could compare notes afterwards.

Let me know if you're in.

Mar 07, 2008 15:50:29 Okay, I'll need to make a change because Sat 22nd is Easter Saturday - store is closed, gamers away at family functions.

I'm going for next Saturday now, but if we all aimed to be running a Gygaxian module soon, then that would be cool. I'm going to pre-gen some 11th level characters (3d6 down the page) and run a few hours of Tomb of Horrors. I had toyed with Expedition or Keep, but Tomb is the iconic and I've always wanted to run it.

Let me know how your plans are turning out.

Incidently, whereabouts did you live in Australia?

Mar 10, 2008 4:58:58 I can confirm that I'll be going ahead on Saturday at the FLGS with the Tomb of Horrors.

The best thing about it though - one of my regular players has asked if his son could join us for his first game of D&D. Shaping up to be a brilliant day.

RR, I'm in Toowoomba, a town about 120kms west of Brisbane.

Mar 18, 2008 5:24:53 We had six players all told - including two who hadn't played for years, but remembered the good old days, and one of my regular crew who brought along his son to cut his teeth on the "whole role-playing thing".

First game + Tomb of Horrors = I hope he's not scarred for life.

They had a blast, we went through nine PC's in three hours and completed the module. Quote of the day goes to one fo the old-schoolers who hadn't played Tomb before:

"Man this is vicious, was Gary having a bad day when he wrote this?"

Still, loads of fun and I've never used the phrases "no saving throw allowed" or "you're disintegrated" that often. Incidently, the Thief did stick his hand in the statues mouth, looking for traps. What's best is he thought it was funny.

Again, I cannot ever repay the debt I owe Mr Gygax for the good times and good company.

Sorry about the late response. I haven't been on here in a while. I have had an old friend from out of town here since last weekend, and it's been a whirlwind of people in and out of my house ever since. We had to postpone last weekend's game, but we will be back in action this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes.

Sounds like you guys had a blast. That's hilarious, what that guy said about Gary having a bad day. Also, it's great to hear that a newbie had fun at his first game. Hopefully he will be addicted now. haha.

Once again, sorry about the late response. I haven't had the time to check the boards recently.
Anyways, we decided that since my wife, and one other of our regular players aren't available to play for a few weeks, we are going to hold off on the Tomb until everyone can get in on it. None of us have ever played it before, and no one wants to miss it. Funny how keen everyone is to get killed, haha.
When we DO get to descend into the Tomb, I will let you know how it goes.

Once again, sorry about the late response. I haven't had the time to check the boards recently.
Anyways, we decided that since my wife, and one other of our regular players aren't available to play for a few weeks, we are going to hold off on the Tomb until everyone can get in on it. None of us have ever played it before, and no one wants to miss it. Funny how keen everyone is to get killed, haha.
When we DO get to descend into the Tomb, I will let you know how it goes.

Neat, I look forward to hearing how it went. The same "line up to be killed" is true about Dragon Mountain (which my players are champing at the bit for); but as far as lethal goes Tomb is in a league of its own.
