Bear with me.
{ ahem , grizzled greybeard voice }

The years and eons went by. PHB 1st edition and 2nd edition were memorized, "torn"-up and even forgotten. The simultaneously heinous and wonderful 3rd and 3.5 editions came out. I just couldn't navigate the newer PHBs very well. I couldn't figure it out. I didn't know why. Why? m'Cuz :

Cleric
Druid
Fighter
Paladin
Ranger
Magic-User
Illusionist
Thief
Assassin
Monk
...
psionics
Bard

[rant] For 20+ years !!! [/rant]

So I'm looking at the 3rd Edition PHB, and a part of my brain ... (a buried smidgen of conciousness; something so automaticly normalized, it's almost moronal-ized; something Abnormal Psychology will not be observing anytime soon ) ... winked at me.

Barbarian
Bard
Cleric
Druid
Fighter
Monk
Paladin
Ranger
Rogue
Sorcerer
Wizard

There's something there. What am I missing?

:lightbulb

{ ... sort of like Beavis getting and idea, and immediately it goes away ... }

Barb arian
Bard
C leric
D ruid
F ighter
M onk
P aladin
R anger
R ogue
S orcerer
W izard

Oh. That's it.
It's alphabetical.
Those sneaky bastich's.
Dang kids.

Question : How do you complete this phrase - I am sooo 1st Edition, I just noticed that ...

Heheh, yup. It was, well, kinda alphabetical in 1e. Kinda.

CLERIC
Druid
FIGHTER
Paladin
Ranger
MAGIC-USER
Illusionist
THIEF
Assassin

The main classes were listed alphabetically, then the subclasses were listed under their respective main classes.

Of course, this neglects the monk and the bard, who were always listed after the above classes, so it wasn't perfectly consistent. Then again, neither was 1e itself. ;) (Not necessarily a bad thing.)

I hear you loud and clear. My group always laughs at me when I can't figure out where they hid the Fighter entry.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
