I'm trying to find the name of the artist that did the cover of Red cover of the Basic Box set (you know, the one with the male wizard and female fighter with spear fighting the ddragon).

Google is not being much help. Many thanks for anyone who can help me..

Actually, all D&D Basic sets have adventurers fighting a dragon -- and all except the Red Box (BECMI, fourth edition) feature a fighter and a wizard.
But the Erol Otus cover seems nearest to what described by the OP.

Holmes (1st) Basic Set: Sutherland

Moldvay (2nd) Basic Set: Otus

Mentzer (3rd) Basic Set: Elmore

Later ("The Classic D&D game"), I don't know.

Sure. But given that the booklet was red, some people mistakenly say that the box was red, even though they nonetheless mean to refer to the Moldvey set.
