Should I just infest it with a talking louse familiar? Then again, I don't suppose one of those is possible either. What am I to do? Edit: I play 2.0 by the by |
| #2zombiegleemaxJun 23, 2004 15:44:26 | That's pretty much up to your DM (you?) as 2e only allowed intelligent weapons. In special cases I allowed other intelligent items though and the rules presented in the DMG don't require much in the way of conversion for something like that. ![]() |

If you're the DM, you can of course just make it up and not go into any great detail on the hows and whys. But if you're a player, and your character is trying to make one, well...you've got to satisfy the DM's requirements on how to create a new magic item, and intelligent magic items must be extremely difficult to make or else we'd all have intelligent magic armour with eyes on the back so we'd never be surprised. Hey!That's another brilliant idea! |
| #4zombiegleemaxJun 25, 2004 0:05:04 | I love the idea of an intelligent flying carpet. In my next campaign, my party is essentially going to liberate one from its captors. They won't be able to communicate with it, yet it will contain a wealth of knowledge from its adventures in the past that will translate into adventures for my party, as they uncover secrets the carpet knows. It will also be uncontrollable, so they won't necessarily have access to use it as they want to. It'll be a DM controlled NPC, in essense. Maybe it will help, maybe it won't. It'll definitely whet their appetites for a cool magical item, but really won't always be of much help to them. Thanks for the great idea! |
| #5zombiegleemaxJun 25, 2004 0:58:51 | Well, I guess that Flying Carpet from the DISNEY movie ALADIN was intelligent, wasn't it? It seemed to have emotions and stuff. Why not? |
| #6zombiegleemaxJun 26, 2004 10:16:45 | I do have a flying carpet, but it's not intelligent. I would also like to point out that I have not yet found my familiar. Any ideas as to how I can make my carpet like an intelligent carpet? Could I have it possessed by a spirit? |
| #7zombiegleemaxJun 26, 2004 11:38:51 | Well, I can't say I know what the 'intelligence' level of the one on ALADIN was, but perhaps the Magic User commissioned a master weaver to make the actual carpet for hi; and the Wizard came up with the idea of 'infusing' the Carpet with the Wizards personality, enough to let it run. |
| #8zombiegleemaxJul 03, 2004 7:28:22 | Originally posted by Xan_Emrys Are you sure the Carpet isn't intelligent but you just have no means to comunicate with it/It has no way of communicating with you (and it is just being compliant cause it's hopeless to communicate)? ![]() I think you might want a Psionist or someone that knows about Magic Carpets to look at the Carpet to see if their is a Intelligence/Seninence in the Carpet. Think there is separate a roll for that (determining if a object is sentinent) but you haven't checked, have you? ![]() Maybe the Rug has been trying to talk to you all along but you don't know "carpet" |
| #9zombiegleemaxJul 03, 2004 13:21:12 | Perhaps my theory would work. A powerfull magic user, looking to make this magic carpet, approaches a master weaver/carpet maker (whom aside from making magnificent rugs, when it comes down to it, is just a normal man). THe Magic User offers to 'infuse this weaver' into the Magic Carpet, essentially granting the Weaver serial immortality as he is now a magic carpet, able to live forever and such and gets to fly as well. The Master Weaver may be old, maybe he wants to see others appreciate his work over the years, but once he becomes 'the magic carpet' has all this energy and vitality again. |

| #11zombiegleemaxJul 03, 2004 16:22:38 | Originally posted by DmJoeSolarte A psionically empowered item would naturally have a personality as well (Maybe the Master Weaver has a Psionic wild talent that he likes to infuse his works with to tighten the bonds or whatever, though being able to use the "animation","Telepathy" or such would be required for the personality to more than just exist inside the carpet) |
| #12zombiegleemaxJul 03, 2004 18:03:30 | Thing is, you don't have to be a Psionist to be a master weaver. This master weaver could be some old lady in a village somewhere, whom nonetheless crafts the most magnificent carpets the realms have ever seen. Magic Items are generally required to be made of the highest quality available, and the said Magic User may say "Well, this old hag in the local village is known thruout the realms for her weaving skills so...." and perhaps part of 'what she puts into it', in her hard work and toil, rub off on the carpet, giving it some of her personality. |
| #13darkbard3Jul 06, 2004 12:10:01 | Or, if your DM allowed the combo, you could use Polymorph Any Object in conjunction with Permanancy, then enchant the intellegent carpet to fly. Finding a willing participant might be problematic, though... |
