Yes, probably. Though I suppose that is mostly up to your DM. 4)Somewhere safe. 5)The Ritual itself is all flavour text. Becoming a Lich mechanics wise is nothing more than adding a template, the 'Ritual' is purely up to you and the DM. |

You need a gem suitable for casting Magic Jar, generally a ruby, sapphire, or emerald worth 100 gp. Then you need to craft the potion, which is made from an assortment of powerful poisons, which are enchanted with spells that do negative energy damage. Then you preform the ritual which involves, somehow, casting magic jar to put your soul in the gem, drinking the poison to kill your body, reanimating your body using create (greater) undead, and making Magic Jar permanant. The gem is then your phylactery. That all comes from somewhere in 2nd ed, I forget where exactly. Don't try this at home. As for Lycanthropy, it's a disease, and Undead are immune to disease, so most likely you would be 'cured' of being a were-dog. As a side note, when you say Were-dog, do you mean Werewolf, or do you turn into a beagle or something? |

But it really depends on the game, as 'were' is considered a disease RAW, but some GMs (me) prefer to treat it as a curse or both. The best place to leave a phylactery is where it won't be noticed, found or even destroyed by accident. I had a GM use it as a door knob on a key magic gate in the middle of the lich's lair. As the whole area was crawling with portals, transformations, etc, we could not find the...thing! |

| #6eldritch_lordMar 23, 2008 21:10:06 | There's a thread on how best to protect a phylactery floating around the boards; link if I can find it. I personally use the spell that splits your phylactery into multiple ones, cast it a few dozen times, and scatter them all over the multiverse. |

In other words, you don't know if someone finds it, or even if someone has destroyed it. You don't get a magical wake-up call if your phylacrity suddenly goes boom. So, it's a toss up between Hiding it, then risking it being found without your knowledge, or holding onto it and KNOWING that if you get taken down, the people who do you in will almost certainly find and break it immediately. EDIT: Let me give you an example. In a game (back in 2nd ed) at one point, I was playing with some friends, and one of the party members was a rogue with Kleptomania. He looted EVERYTHING. So, as we were proceeding down, we found a hidden hallway. Full of traps. So we went down it. At the end, we found some treasure, including a necklace with a powerful aura of necromantic power. We decided it was cursed and smashed it, just to be safe. Later, we get to the end, Fight and defeat the Lich, go 'Great, now we need to find it's phylacrity', then pull out the shattered necklace and go 'Oh, right...' |

You don't get a magical wake-up call if your phylacrity suddenly goes boom. well if you are a lich I would assume that you naturally had the ability and intelligence to at least cast Alarm and permanency on the darn thing. And as we know that spell gives of a mental alarm if you wish it to. |
