I run a 1st edition game and was surprised to see nothing on weapon speed for missle weapons. Anyone know the modifiers to initiative when using a missle weapon such as a bow or sling?

In AD&D1st edition, speed factors are used only for melee weapons.

unlike, 2nd ed, its never used as a modifier to initiative rolls, but only to determine ties in melee.

partly b/c in the Original D&D (1974) rules based on Chainmail (1971 with the fantasy rules supplement) missile fire occured first.

if you were holding say a bow and had a quiver of arrows...

you could fire at the start of the round. or wait and fire at any time during the round as others moved.

it meant you got them in range.
