Do you guys roll moster rxn everytime an encounter occurs? I usually do it for neutral or good alignments....I assume (wrongly?) that chaotic/evil monsters will not be friendly to clerics or neutral characters so I don't roll for theat alignment....I think I need to get my nearly defeated party to safety.......there's an underground city 2 levels down....I ran into 2 36hp/each Hill giants just now....shouls I roll for their rxn?.....

I always roll for initiative, once for the monsters, once for the players.

As for the Hill Giant encounter, maybe you could find a way to sneak about the Hillgiants without them finding out.

Giants, and especially Hill Giants aren't known for their vast intellectual capacity. Simply stating they are imagining things might get you off the hook. No rolling required.

Clever fellar. Choose your battles and avoid those that you can.

Whenever possible, plan your battles ahead of time (cast defensive/"boost" spells before opening that door). Aways have a back-up plan. Always attempt to disengage if nothing else is working. Better to run and live than die fighting a lost cause.
