| #1zombiegleemaxSep 29, 2006 19:21:26 | Hey guys, I am starting a campaign in MYstara. I have all the books, and the rules. I was thinking of converting the Old D&D into 3.5 to play the world. Then I had an idea. I have all the old sets (Red, Blue, etc) all the way up to the Immortals. Why not just use the old rules? It's simpler and might play faster. Should I use the old rules or just convert to 3.5? |
| #2ElendurSep 29, 2006 22:13:12 | Hmm, what response might you expect from the out of print forum? If you and your players are comfortable with the old rules, I'd definitely use them. Why do a bunch of converting if you don't need to? However, sometimes DMs find it hard to find players for anything but the current edition. In that case playing in 3e would make sense. The conversion's not that big a deal. Unless you have strong feelings about the details of the rules mechanics, which many people around here do. |

| #5weasel_fierceSep 30, 2006 10:08:38 | To me, Mystara pretty much IS the red and blue books. Why mess with perfection ? ![]() |
| #6havardSep 30, 2006 17:47:03 | To me, Mystara pretty much IS the red and blue books. Why mess with perfection ? I agree. If the Classic rules are acceptable to you, they are the ones that the setting was tailored around. To me Classic Mystara goes hand in hand with the red, blue, green, black and gold sets, though RC/WotI works too! ![]() Ofcourse, I've been known to run Mystara with a wide range of systems including 3E, GURPS, TORG/MasterBook, DL SAGA etc. Next, maybe I'll give the new RuneQuest a shot with Mystara...? | #7weasel_fierceSep 30, 2006 19:36:24 | Runequest is like barbecue sauce. It goes well with everything ![]() Runequest mystara could work well. With the companion, you'd have plenty of options for magic, and divine magic is a lot cooler than the clerical stuff |
| #8zombiegleemaxSep 30, 2006 22:54:49 | My honest answer is this: which version that you have can you get players that you normally game with play? If you are thinking of playing with the original and all of the players only play edition 3.5 (or the inverse situation), it's not going to help to make it in a version that the players that you normally game with don't want to play. Just a suggestion. |
| #9weasel_fierceSep 30, 2006 22:57:13 | Communication definately ![]() Conversely, if you go through the trouble of preparing a campaign, it'd be a bunch of ungratefull buggers to refuse, based purely on the rules used. |
| #10zombiegleemaxSep 30, 2006 23:57:50 | Conversely, if you go through the trouble of preparing a campaign, it'd be a bunch of ungratefull buggers to refuse, based purely on the rules used. Hey, people like to play what they like to play. All I'm saying is that before you take the time to do it, just make sure someone is willing to play it. |
| #11weasel_fierceSep 30, 2006 23:59:37 | I agree with you that you should talk to people first. I guess I just dont get the "we will only play one game" mindset. The people I've gamed with have generally been the "if you bring the book, and a 2 litre of mountain dew, we'll play" types. |
| #12zombiegleemaxOct 01, 2006 0:08:29 | Hey, I'm the same way: I'll play them all. In fact, I like to switch it up as to not get into a rut if it was my druthers. |
| #13weasel_fierceOct 01, 2006 0:09:47 | yeah, variation keeps the little gray cells going ![]() |
| #14zombiegleemaxOct 12, 2006 10:19:37 | Hey guys, go with basic,ur immagination will never forgive u otherwise |
| #15GhendarOct 12, 2006 10:39:26 | I guess I just dont get the "we will only play one game" mindset. The people I've gamed with have generally been the "if you bring the book, and a 2 litre of mountain dew, we'll play" types. Well then I'm quite envious of your group because the guys I normally play with wouldn't be caught dead playing anything other than 3.5. ![]() You have no idea how much I'd like to sink my dice into a good basic D&D or AD&D game. |
