In the tale of "Culhwch and Olwen" in the Mabinogion, are listed a vast number of the Knights at King Arthur's Court whom Culhwch called upon to help him in his quest to win Olwen. As for Tolkien, he had always maintained that the Rohirrim are speaking old English as a stand-in since he hadn’t actually developed a language for them. Its the same reason the Hobbits apparently speak 17th and 18th century English.
