I have taken it upon myself to posit the existence of a set of heretofore undiscovered particles, which I will refer to as the alivotron, the deadocule and the relivoquark. Definitions: Alivotron: Present in all living matter. Aligned with the Positive Energy Plane. Various means have been found to suppress the alivotrons inside a body (see: Tomb-Tainted Soul), but the death of an organism results in the decay of alivotrons into deadocules, excepting special cases where exposure to negative energy causes alivotrons to transform instead into relivoquarks. Deadocule: Present in all formerly-living matter. Unaligned. Prone to conversion into relivoquarks. Large quantities of magic have been known to cause deadocules to form within inert matter, where magic can be further used to cause the matter to act in ways characteristic of living creatures (see: animate object). Over time, deadocules dissipate, their dissolution progressing at a speed remarkably similar to the rate at which the body that contained them loses recognizability as a corpse, as is evidenced in the ability of a skeletal system to be re-animated almost exclusively a skeletal creature. Deadocules can be converted into alivotrons or relivoquarks through exposure to positive or negative energy, although the rate of conversion depends on the amount and type of energy to which they are exposed. Negative Energy: Energy coming from, or related to, the Negative Energy Plane. Frequently used by magic-users. Spells utilizing negative energy typically fall under the school of Necromancy and/or possess the Evil descriptor. Positive Energy: Energy coming from, or related to, the Positive Energy Plane. Frequently used by magic-users. Spells utilizing positive energy often inhabit the Conjuration (healing) subschool, and have been known to possess the Good descriptor from time to time. Relivoquark: Present in reanimated matter. Aligned to the Negative Energy Plane. Upon the destruction (or "redeath") of the creature containing them, relivoquarks decay into deadocules, although they are clearly of a different kind, or isotope, because no known cases exist of them then being transformed back into relivoquarks. The Negative Energy Plane: The source of all negative energy. The Positive Energy Plane: The source of all positive energy. Additional Information: Creatures are usually separated into types. For the purposes of this article, presume all living creatures to be categorized together as containing mostly alivotrons. Undead contain mostly relivoquarks, and constructs contain mostly deadocules. Elementals contain mostly particles of their respective elements. Outsiders exemplify a category too broad to generalize. Many outsiders do possess alivotrons, but some contain deadocules, some contain relivoquarks, and many contain elemental particles. Some even contain none of the aforementioned particles, and some lead me to postulate particles that have yet to be addressed (for example, transitive particles). Conclusions: Since most living creatures subsist primarily, if not exclusively, off of deadocules, it is possible that the ingestion and subsequent conversion of deadocules into alivotrons is necessary for the production of new organisms. Particles have been known to become energized ("healing" the organism they occupy) when exposed to energy they are aligned to. Conversely, organisms become agitated ("Damaging" the organism they occupy) when they are exposed to energy they are aligned against. As a side note, deadocules can be transformed into alivotrons or relivoquarks when exposed to enough positive or negative energy. Since energy is known to exist even in areas where there is little or no connectivity to the Inner Planes (examples include cold, electricity, fire, living creatures, matter, and undead continuing to exist within anti-magic and dimensionally-inaccessible areas, i.e. anti-magic, dimensional lock, protection from []) it is entirely possible that living creatures and undead do not subsist off of a connection to their aligned energy planes, but rather that the particles within them exist independently of their aligned planes. Other Areas Bearing Investigation: Do constructs contain deadocules, or some other particle? Hypothetically, unlivotons could be subject to undiscovered energy types, or even be parallel to transitive particles. Do other categories of particle, corresponding to the Astral, Ethereal and Shadow planes exist? Are there yet more particles? What kinds of particles, if any, do outsiders that are the "souls" or "spirits" of the deceased possess? Assuming that particles do exist within animate matter, what is their relation to life/unlife/afterlife? Do they cause it, allow it, or simply exist alongside it? Some creatures can be differentiated from others of their kind by supernatural abilities they exhibit. Do these creatures, employing "psionics" and "incarnum," possess other, different particles, or variants of those postulated here? Do creatures capable of utilizing magic(s) unusual for their species consist of a different particle makeup than the typical individual of their race? Do creatures capable of utilizing magic at all, assuming their race possesses no innate ability to do so, possess a different particle makeup? Show Obviously this is meant to be humorous, but I also would like to defuse a little of the debate over the nature and alignment of the Positive and Negative Energy Planes. Choosing an opinion and cleaving to it heedless of all else in the various arguments over these planes is part of the reason there is still an argument, instead of a conclusive, inoffensive resolution that can garner a modicum of acceptance. Very probably someone has already thought of and tried to express the Positive and Negative Energy Planes using scientific terms and existing physics, and if so I apologize to that person or persons; it is likely that they did a better job than myself. Finally, to preempt a few questions, names for the particles were procured by blatant butchery of existing science terms, and yes, the last "area bearing investigation" was, tragically, inspired by midi-chlorians.

Obviously this is meant to be humorous, but I also would like to defuse a little of the debate over the nature and alignment of the Positive and Negative Energy Planes.
