On Blocking

I have gone through a number of games where players (mainly the new ones) wanted to block attacks and were disappointed when they couldn't. So, I have come up with a rule on blocking. Mind you this is not parrying in any manner, your character is throwing their weapons and shields in the way to stop attacks--the idea behind the rule is of lasting longer in combat.

My homegrown game system is very straightforward when it comes to combat. There is no society base need for twirling swords and shifty fighters, so no parrying has been invented yet. Nor is there an advanced society where design of self-preservation combat would even have been generated. In most of the societies, death is a highly acceptable reward.

Blocking –
As a move equivalent action you can block an attack with an object that is held, but doing so provokes an attack of opportunity from all nearby combatants, except for the initial attacker. To initiate a block you must ready your move equivalent action to block and declare it after a successful hit has be declared, but before the damage is determined. The object that does the blocking receives damage as if it was sundered. If the attack was a critical hit it will only deal normal damage and not an increased damage. A character can make a block with each melee weapon or shield that they are wielding properly per appendage per round.

When fighting unarmed or bare fisted with Improved Unarmed Combat and Monk’s unarmed strike can also be used to block but because of their dual nature both fist or open palms must be used together to be successful. The Feat Improved Unarmed Combat and Monk’s unarmed strike allows the character the skill and knowledge to block attacks with their bare hands, it is more in the sense of a deflection instead of a block for that purpose. The exceptions are that a monk’s unarmed strike, the feat Improved Unarmed strike and natural weapons do not receive damage as if sundered, again it is more like a deflection. To be able to block as a free action you must have a base attack of +1 or higher.

Blocking cannot be used to initiate a grapple, a trip, or a disarm. Blocking is the act of putting a wielded object in the way of an attack to stop it. Melee weapons and natural melee weapons can block attacks that are from a attacker one size category larger or smaller than the wielder. Shields can block melee and ranged attacks that are from an attacker two size categories larger and small than wielder. Yes, it is possible to be a human with a buckler and to block the attack from a huge size creature, no guarantees that the human or the shield or the human will survive. You must have a wisdom score 3 or higher to call a block. Finally not ever weapon can block such as dart, sling, spiked armor, whip, spiked chain, bolas, net, shuriken and gauntlets.

Melee weapons - melee weapons - one size difference

Shields - melee weapons, natural melee weapons, ranged weapons, natural ranged weapons- two size difference

Natural melee weapon - natural melee weapons - one size difference

If the player wants to attempt to block attacks during their round its called Fighting Defensively; there are rules for this already.
