I had no problem with this but I didn’t want the PC to fall behind so I came up with this reverse Level Adjustment system. It gets sticky if you try to multiclass, but otherwise it works great. I got the idea from the DM's Guide saying to treat members of an NPC Class as one level lower than their actual level when figuring EL, so I added that idea to the experience table and here it is. To use it treat Warriors, Adepts, Aristocrats, and Experts as EL -1 and Commoners as EL -2. XP EL-2 EL-1 Normal 0 1 1 1 250 2 1 1 500 3 2 1 1,000 4 3 2 3,000 5 4 3 6,000 6 5 4 10,000 7 6 5 15,000 8 7 6 21,000 9 8 7 28,000 10 9 8 36,000 11 10 9 45,000 12 11 10 55,000 13 12 11 66,000 14 13 12 78,000 15 14 13 91,000 16 15 14 105,000 17 16 15 120,000 18 17 16 136,000 19 18 17 153,000 20 19 18 171,000 - 20 19 190,000 - - 20 |

He loves his Craft feats, and I like him using it. I think it have substantial role playing merit. He wanted to become very skillful in forging new weapons and armor but was unhappy with the 2+INT skill points clerics get. So I told him about the NPC class of Expert and he liked it. He took two levels in it, which I decided is +1 ECL, so that his character is now 10 Clr / 2 Exp, and his ECL is therefore 11. I think what I did there is fair and the PC loved it. |

I would assume they have something else going for them besides their hit dice (fey, for instance, typically have numerous racial special abilities), otherwise they probably aren't worth considering for player use. |
