I want to use T1-Village of Hommlet module as a replacement for a small community near a river. I have already decided the name the hamlet "Ommleth" in honor of this classic module (old timers will love it and newbies won't have a clue).

I have never actually read or played in this module, however. Is it worth $5 as a download? The reviews I read are positive, if pointing out its classic nature.

I mostly want to populate the town with interesting, seedy characters. I have already downloaded a conversion that has me interested. Keep in mind I am NOT interested in T1-4 Temple of Elemental Evil or its modern successor.

AFAIC it's one of the best modules ever. It's an excellent base on which to build an entire campaign, as well as a good low level adventure.

Well, as you might infer from my name, I am a huge fan of Hommlet. I have owned it since the very beginning of ny rpg days, and it was traditional in my group to play a Hommlet game at least once per year!

$5? Cheap and worth every penny!

I'd recommend "The Village of Hommlet" as well. It's a nice module, especially for $5.

After you have a chance to review the PDF file, shoot us back a post on this thread and let us know what you thought of the module.

I also highly suggest the Temple of Elemental Evil which greatly expands on Hommlet and also includes the T1 module and sales for 5 bucks. You can usually find a hardcopy of T1 on Ebay for a decent price as well. For updates on Hommlet in the current game year for Greyhawk, check out the Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil. Excellent adventure.

I caved and bought T1-4 Temple of Elemental Evil instead of T1-VoH. I skimmed through it and it's interesting. I like the variety of characters included, ranging from the innocent to the plain sinister. I think I'll combine Hommlet and Nulb together. The Temple itself, I'll probably use later....

A few minor quibbles. I dislike the prose, the overuse of the term 'Old Faith' to mean druid. Other than that, it's good brainfood.

"Old Faith" doesn't neccessarily mean "druid."

In actuality, T1 is from the World of Greyhawk whose populace values the term "Old Faith" as the devotion to Mother Oerth (the planet), which usually means worshipping Beory and/or Obad-Hai (and sometimes even Ehlonna.)

Rangers and even commonfolk can be considered to be of "Old Faith," so long as they meet the above criteria. So, the term is not exclusive to druids.

Hopefully that clears the issue up for you. If you have any further questions pertaining to T1 I suggest heading over to the World of Greyhawk forum where you'll find alot of people that are very knowledgable about Hommlet and T1-4 in general.

The text does state that the old faith means druidical.

I would like to combine Nulb and Hommlet into one village. Any side effects of doing so? Keep in mind the Temple of Elemental Evil doesn't exist yet.

Regardless if Old Faith means druid or any follower of nature, the module is still neat.

Mr. Gregg

Just because some one is described as druidical doesn't make them a "druid."

If I act in a priestly fashion, that doesn't necessarily mean I'm a priest.

Druidical can easily be explained in the exact same fashion as I stated above.ie... in tune with mother oerth and the natural life and/or habitat upon it.

If you care to debate this point further, simply consider me as repeating myself, quoting my 1st post. ;)

Or you can accept my viewpoint or agree to disagree. (I'm right though.. haha)

I never said anybody was a druid. I said the text states that 'Old Faith' means druidical. Originally, in T1, it didn't even say 'Old Faith', it just said druidical. Ssampier said, "the term 'Old Faith' to mean druid". I don't believe he thought that everybody described as followers of the 'Old Faith' were druids, as in the class, just that they were followers of the druidical religion, which is the correct interpretation of the text.

Ssampier, I don't think combining the two communities would work without completely changing the flavor of one of the settlements. I don't think the two populations could tolerate each other as is.

I had considered that. I think, in retrospect, it is best to keep them separate.

I didn't necessarly imply all "Old Faith" members were druids. The stat block imply most residents are 0 level folks with no class.

T1 is one of my all-time favorites. I've run it so many times, Hommlet feels like my second home. When you say "interesting and seedy characters", that's pretty much the module I think of. Everybody in the hamlet has a little hint of a backstory, and a few are spies and such.

I would keep Nulb & Hommlet seperate too. Nulb is pretty much desolate except for the two taverns and the smithy, and I usually give the whole area a really creepy atmosphere. Hommlet is more like your traditional medieval village (barely any demi-humans too!).

When running this module, I also like to drum up the tension between the followers of the Old Faith (mostly farmers and longtime villagers with blood that runs deep in the village), and the recent spread of the Cuthbertian faith (who are often slightly more civilized folk who immigrated in recent years from towns like Verbobonc).

It is a great module. It is a classic that has added so much to so many different campaigns throughout the years. I would highly recommend that if you havent played it or DMed it that you would.

Nope I'm young enough to not have played Hommlet or ToEE. I was 6 or 7 when ToEE came out. It's all new to me ;) *

*luckily I have played 2nd ed for many years so the stat blocks aren't a complete mystery

^ Not too shabby.

Anyhow, just chiming in the say that Hommlet is a hoot. A wonderful example of how 1E would frequently just give you a little town to play with...

I've seen it used to refer to bard's which are members too. Kinda the old 1e Celtic link of bards to a druidic group.

I'm glad you liked it!

Cole Deschain

qstor You're welcome. I did enjoy the flavor behind ToEE (it was the same price as VoH). I don't plan on using the Temple now, but at some point, I will.

dontheox Thanks, but I since I have the electronic ToEE I don't need them. Thanks anyway. I'm sure you'll find them a good home (with friends or ebay).
