| #1EscefJan 27, 2008 15:19:26 | So, I was looking around and noticing how many folk in this section of the boards have very negative opinions of 3e/3.5e. That's fine, everyone entitled to an opinion and all. So, what do you think of the idea of a small flock of 3e/3.5 players joining the Out of Print section in a few months? ![]() |
| #2handsome_strangerJan 27, 2008 19:07:38 | Fortunately, somebody answered this question for me. http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=27026 |
| #3mock26Jan 27, 2008 19:42:12 | I think it is funny! I remember way back, when I first joined these forums, a lot of 3.0 players kept telling me to just get over the fact that 2nd edition was gone, that it was obsolete, and that I should stop complaining about 3.0. Now they'll get a dose of what they used to preach to the old 2nd edition gamers. I think I'll be handing out buckets of Karma Korn, and smiling as the new additions to the Out Of Print Society (OOPS) choke it down. |
| #4true_atlanteanJan 27, 2008 21:35:58 | I know that it has been discussed before, but I'd still like to see the 3.0/3.5 people have their own forum, outside of this one. This is the discussion forum for 1st and 2nd ed really, despite the sign on the door. I think that adding post 2nd ed to the mix is a bad moove that will dilute the flavour of this area. It's not that I don't welcome them, it's just that I prefer to talk straight 1st and 2nd ed here with people of the same metality. The 3.0 people will still need a place to discuss their ideas just as we do. I just don't think that place is here. |

The only reason this forum is for the discussion of 1st and 2nd edition is because they are the only out of print versions of D&D. (Well, technically, you could include Basic D&D, but I think you get the point.) So, you are technically right about "despite the sign on the door." However, once 4.0 hits the shelves 3.x clearly fits into this forum because it will be Out Of Print. At that point this will be the discussion forum for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd ed really, despite the sign on the door. |

Uggh. 3.x may becoming OOP very soon, but that doesn't mean we have a lot to discuss in common. I don't say that to be cruel, but I cherish the few places that are left to discuss AD&D rules and mechanics without the rules confusion that would inevitably result. |

I agree with you, but, given the fact that The Powers That Be lumped all Out Of Pring D&D subjects in a single section I imagine that they won't spend the effort to seperate 3.0 from AD&D. |
| #8extempusJan 28, 2008 2:58:26 | There really wasn't all that much difference between 1e and 2e IMHO (it's not apples and oranges, but red and green apples), but once 3e/3.5e is added to the mix, then it will definitely be apples and oranges... |

Thanks, Extempus, this was essentially what I was trying to say. 3.0/3.5 is a very different game - it deserves its own forum. |
| #10fernsJan 28, 2008 6:15:50 | I couldnt agree more, the forum we old timers have here, is our sanctuary. It's here we can discuss the game we have known since we were children/youngsters. I think 3.x should have the same breathing place. The opportunity to have something for themselves, just as they and we have now. We might all be playing something oop soon, but we play completely different games/systems. Lets have different places to share our knowledge and love for that. |
| #11ShiftkittyJan 28, 2008 14:34:23 | My husband and I had a big laugh over the whiners sobbing on and on about how 4e was going to destroy the game they loved so dearly. An old friend of mine was whining the same old song when they went from 1e to 2e, and in protest gave me all of his old books, including a first printing Arenson set with ALL of the supplements. I have all of my old stuff, I play 3.5, and I plan to give 4e a fair shake. My players know me well enough that they only wonder how I'm going to implement the changes without causing a hiccup in the story. I'm sure some stuck-in-the-mud codgers (mindset, not actual chronological age) will wind up here getting all misty-eyed over the good old days, and I feel you old-schoolers are quite justified in laughing your butts off at them, but I hope that enough others will be mature enough to at least give the new guy, 4e, a chance. (And try not to laugh too loud. Save some for when the 4e converts are whining about 5e...:D ) |

D&D enjoyed about a 10 year span before 3.0 came out and about 2 years after that 3.5. Now barely 5 years later they are coming out with 4.0. I think time is the main thing. -Windquake |
| #14true_atlanteanFeb 28, 2008 2:09:09 | I have all of my old stuff, I play 3.5, and I plan to give 4e a fair shake. I plan on giving it the once over as well, picking it clean for any ideas that are likely in, and then giving it a go with my regular party. The main reason for the purchase will be to play the new Living Forgotten Realms Campaign, although I am a little concerned about the experience. It will be with a new edition in a game world where the timeline has been advanced almost 100 years. I'm glad that I'll have a 2nd ed campaign to fall back to as well. From what I've seen (and I've been trying to read most of the 4e lead-up material to make an informed opinion) it will be like owning two entirely different fantasy games. |

Now barely 5 years later they are coming out with 4.0. 2e released in '89, it ran 11 years, 3e released in 2000, then 3.5 three years after (2003). Many game designers have noted that 2e's lifespan was the result of flawed corporate policy, and had nothing to do with its viability as a rules system. Don't get me wrong, I loved 2e back in the day, played during its entire run. But looking back, it's a system with a lot of holes in it, and I didn't have the patience to keep plugging them. |

Additionally, if you take 3rd edition as a whole it will have run for 8 years. That is a decent amount of time for it to run, and it isn't that much longer than 2nd edition's run of 11 years. |

True as far as it goes, but 1e and 2e are much closer than 3.0 and 3.5, so if you're doing apples to apples, you've got to compare AD&D's 22 years (IIRC) with D20 Fantasy's 8 year run, so it's nearly 3:1 in favor of AD&D. |

That's fine, everyone entitled to an opinion and all. Simply won't happen, well it will but the forum topics will be divided into 1e/2e and 3e and up sections. Makes sense if you ask me. |
| #19AlasFeb 29, 2008 14:41:11 | I suspect that when 3rd/3.5 goes out-of-print, there will be enough call to set up separate boards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd editions. Wishful thinking, perhaps, but it'd be kind of neat for the total newcomers to wander around and see how far back the D&D experience goes. (If/when they do, be nice! Remeber, there are no stupid questions; just -1 Int penalties.) I'm looking forward to 4th edition, but then I've loved every edition of the game. I still snap up those yellow-orange spined AD&D books where and when I can. |
