I've been rooting through my stuff and haven't gotten to the modules yet, but I can already see some tattered, dog-eared things promising to dredge up many a pleasant memory of killing the bad guys and rescuing the village/hostage/sacred artifact/etc. I think I've got one with a semi-monochromatic cover, but right now the oldest one I can readily identify (only because it's poking out at me) is "The Forgotten Temple of Tharizdun".

How about you guys?

(My oldest piece in general is a 1975 edition of the game.)

I think the earliest published module I have a copy of is the monchromatic G1, Steading of the Hill Giant Chief, published in 1978.

The earliest rules set I have is a white boxed set with 1974 as the copywrite date, but as this is a "collectors edition" box, I think the set I have was published some years after 1974.

Hmm, that's the rules set I have, but I'm sure mine says 1975. I have a brown box set, which I believe is the first one from 1974, but I have been unsuccessful in locating it in the boxes that got ransacked by the forces of chaos when we moved.

The first two I remember buying were I1, Dwellers of the Forbidden City and S4, The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth. In 1999-2000, I bought second-hand two copies of B2, The Keep on the Borderlands, and even a 1979 3rd edition of the original D&D rulebook (the one with the blue cover, with the fighter and magic user attacking a red dragon on a treasure hoard)... in the last few years, I've managed to get several others, like the Slavers series, but all seem to be dated 1980 and after...

B2 Keep on the Borderlands, blue cover.

The first one I ever bought was Monstrous Compendium Appendix 8: The Outer Planes. I know it's weird to get Balor stats before reading the Player's Handbook. I just thought the cover was cool.

In terms of time in my collection, something from the 90s:
Rage of the Rakasta.

In terms of actual date of publication, some of the older things I own are:
Keep on the Borderland, Isle of Dread, Castle Amber, Test of the Warlords, Into the Maelstrom, Temple of Elemental Evil, and Expedition to the Barrier Peaks.

I'm not as hardcore as most people here I guess, but then again overall, I don't have much of a collection of books.

I've got the second edition Ravenloft Campaign setting box set that a friend found me a few years ago for Christmas, and a lot of the 2e Van Richten Compendiums that I got when my gaming store was getting rid of stuff back before 3.5 came out.

I also somehow managed to inherit a 1e monster compendium.

My oldest modules are from 1980.
My oldest books... late '70's, mostly '77.
I do have the Deities and Demigods with the Moorcock and Lovecraft stuff, which as I understand it is fairly rare.

The earliest product I can remember buying off the shelf is the Player's Handbook. It had a cover by the "Tramp" himself ;): A thief trying to pry a gem from the demon statue's eyes. The cover ink has nearly worn away completely after so many years, and its hard to see, but that's always been a classic image for me.

According to the inside cover, it was the 6th printing, so I prolly bought it sometime in 1980, when I was a mere 10 years old. I don't remember what I paid, but it was worth a week's allowance at the time ($15.00 I think?) It took a few years of persuation, but eventually my mother became interested enough to DM some games for us kids. I remember those games so fondly, and its thanks in large part to a simple, 128 page rulebook.

B1 - In Search of the Unknown -- the version where you had to fill in the monsters and treasure yourself.

(Actually, I might own an older module, but B1 was my first one. What's older than B1?)

1st edition, first printing, monochrome (with reddish-brownish cover) D1, Descent into the depths of the Earth. That is the first module I ever received. I do have, though, a complete set of all first edition modules, nearly all of which are 1st printings, too.

I lucked out in 1984 when I found a copy of Chainmail (3rd edition, 7th printing, April 1979), along with the original supplements I-IV: Greyhawk (12th printing, November 1979), Blackmoor (9th printing, November 1979), Eldritch Wizardry (9th printing, November 1979), and Gods, Demigods & Heroes (7th Printing, November 1979). I even have a copy of Swords & Spells (6th printing, November 1979)...
