My first post here. Been playing D&D 3.5 for a few years, and know the rules pretty well. Just wanted to get some input on this.

I'm going to start playing in a game this weekend. The theme is a haunted mansion sort of theme. According to the DM, not super combat heavy, but if I know him, there will be some difficult combats, even if they aren't plentiful, and I know for certain there will be a lot of crazy traps all over the place.

So... what are you looking for?  A trapfinder?  Someone who dominates battlefields?  A utility character that can do a little bit of everything?

At this point, the best advice I can give you "Artificer 10.  Any non-LA race, because the Arty is that damn good."

Someone who could dominate the battlefield would be good, but I'd also like to be able to deal with traps, even if it's only due to a high reflex save.

There was a level 10 competition around here,
perhaps just before the boards started disappearing.
The thread might still be findable via searching.

Summon Monster 1 or similar are very good
trapspringers around level 10.  You don't need
to devote much to that specific part of the game.

BfControl is the Bat Man Wizard or the God Wizard.
Both of those guides are still around.
Human Feat Rogue 1 / Wizard 9 with Able Learner feat
... is an oldie but goodie.  Can go Psion 9 instead too.

Another option would be Cleric/Prestige Paladin (Unearthed Arana)/Bone Knight (Five Nations).  There was a thread with that around here somewhere, and now I can't find it.

Cleric/ prestige it as you want. www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/findTraps.htm That finds them, and clever RP disarms/triggers them. Summon monster 1/long stick/other stuff.

I'm betting the clever RP disarm method will be more fun for the group than the "I roll d20, get a 28, and Krusk disarms the trap" method. Especially in this sort of game.

Something like the Barbarian's Uncanny Dodge and Trap Sense appeals. A Barbarian stuck in a haunted mansion could be funny. You could always just smash your way through the walls.

Summoned Creatures are a good way to deal with traps. Some more novel ways to disable them might include Wood Warp, Stone Shape or Rock to Mud (play a Druid!). You might also prefer to pick up a "bag of tricks" of abilities to surprise your DM with. I like Totemist for everything, so how about taking two levels and using the Blink Shirt to Dimenion Door at will as a move action? This could be a good way to get yourself out of certain sticky situations.

Resistance/immunity to fear and the like (poison and negative energy are not bad ideas) sounds like - consider a Nightmare Spinner (CM) for that, and to be creepier than the monsters. Chances are though that you'll be fighting fear-immune enemies in turn (e.g. undead).

It depends on what you want to do, really.

Tapfinders/disablers:
Artificer 10
Swift Hunter (Ranger/Scout) (worst option because it requires movement)
Daring Outlaw (Rogue/Swashbuckler)
Daggerspell Mage or Shaper (rogue/mage or druid)
Shadowbane Stalker (rogue/cleric)
Shadowbane Inquisitor (rogue/paladin)

If you want the "spam mobs to set off traps" route:
Druid 10
Arcane Heirophant (wiz3/druid4/AH3)
Daggerspell Shaper
Daggerspell Mage
Necromancer
Bone Knight

If you just want "deal lots of melee damage":
Brb1/Rgr2/Ftr2/Revenant Blade 5
Chain tripper fighter 10
Bone Knight

Unseen Servant is a 1st level psionic power thanks to Secrets of Sarlona, so a psion could pull off the "spam mobs" approach too.
