| #1IschtanMar 20, 2012 18:43:46 | Hi all, I am playing an elf Wizard/Archer Gish (Fighter1/Ranger1/Transmuter6/Spellsword1/Abjurant Champion5/(houseruled)Arcane Archer4) (prohibited: Illusion/Enchantment) and just hit level 18 and don't really know which feat I want to take. Due to the fact, that the AA is houseruled, the character has actually a BAB of +15 and a CL of 14 (and thus 7th level spells). The ability scores (including magic boni) are Str 12, Dex 18, Con 10, Int 27, Wis 10, Cha 9. He has good Saves (+24/+17/+22) but not a good damage output with his bow (several spells to add energy types to the arrow damage, but most enemies have energy resistance) His actual feats are: Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot, Rapid Shot, Combat Casting, Create Magic Arms & Armor, Smiting Spell, Practiced Spellcaster, Weapon Focus(LongBow), Cormanthyran Moon Magic For feat selection almost any official book is allowed, but no Dragon Magazines. In the closer selection of Feats are (with my actual opinion): Spell Focus(Tra) - Not that helpful Arcane Manipulation(LEoF) - May be helpful, hard to evaluate for me Sculpt Spell(CArc) - Really nice (for Glitterdust, Scintillating Sphere, Channeled Sound Blast), but does it function with Imbue Arrow? Extend Spell(PH) - Hm, maybe to get Persitent Spell at Level 21? Minor Shapeshift(CM) - A bit cheesy, and not using Polymorph spells at the moment. Magical Artisan(PGtF) - Going to enchant the bow a lot now, so maybe nice Magic of the Land(RotW) - Really fitting to the character. Healing for a wizard is also nice. But is this feat worth it? Elven Spell Lore(PH2) - Also fitting and not that bad Has anybody any opinion on the listed feats, or does now some other nice feats, maybe also to add some damage each arrow does? |

| #4deoxhydroxinateMar 20, 2012 19:37:16 | WBL = Wealth By Level. What Ael is saying is if you craft your own items your expected character wealth goes up greatly. Improved Initiative is a wonderful feat - going first can often decide a battle before it begins. Sculpt Spell wouldn't bad because of its use with Imbue Arrows. |

The problem here is, that the character can enchant his bow really fast (through a wish), but in the campaign we play, there is almost no downtime, so enchanting other items will be difficult.
True, but with the use of Nerveskitter the Initiative bonus is already +9. But anyhow, this is a good advice, +13 is even better ;)
Good to know that Imbue Arrows works with Sculpt Spell. |

See if it would be possible to use the Craft Point system in Unearthed Arcana. The CP system allows you to spend the points to craft during play (it assumes that you work on crafting while you're camped & such). As it is, your Craft Arms & Armor feat goes to waste also, unless your bow-enchanting ability is based on having it. |

Unfortunately, I don't think I can talk my DM into using the Craft Point system, but that would be great, yes. With bow-enchanting I meant using Craft Arms & Armor to enchant the bow. Sorry for the imprecise naming. |
| #8aelryinthMar 21, 2012 19:47:56 | 'Down time' is EXTREMELY relative. The average group travels for 8 to 12 hours a day. That leaves 12 to 16 hours to fill up. Get a Ring of Sustenance. You only need to meditate/trance 2 hours a day instead of 4. While the party is sacking out, you can work on wondrous items without a problem. As long as you don't get ambushed in the middle of the night to disrupt what you are working on, you're golden. If you're inside a Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion, you're not even going to get interrupted. I think you might be under the impression that magic items have to be made all at one time, i.e. devoted 36 days in a row to making a +6 Int headband. That is not the case. You need 36 days of labor, but they can be taking whenever you have the time. If you make a Crafting Homonculous from Eberron, it can do the 36 days of imbuing the magic while you go out and adventure! Or you can drag it along inside your portable hole, as you like. In short, Crafting is quite easy to still do for a high level adventurer. If you've got to spend your nights inside a Rope Trick or Magnificent Mansion, it's still WORTH IT. Heck, teleporting back home and night and back in the morning is still worth it. ===Aelryinth |
